Beyond Traffic Safety

Peter Rothe's absorbing volume ex-amines one of the most important areas of modern life, the culture of the automobile. Part of the text is devoted to the role played by the driver's license as a form of social control, emphasiz-ing the way in which various images of licensing convey different ideas about traffic safety. Rothe focuses on the development of traffic laws and how laws affect driver behavior. He also traces the roles that discretion and tolerance play in police work. In par-ticular, the dominant traffic violation, speeding, is analyzed. Rothe looks at traffic safety in a new way by presenting it as part of a social scientific framework. He provides a basis for future exploration of this kind. Beyond Traffic Safety is an im-portant and insightful analysis for road users, traffic safety educators, policymakers, psychologists, and sociologists.

This report summarizes the findings from an unprecedented series of 65 public forums held all across the United States between August 1987 and May 1988. The public forums were conceived as an element of the initial fact-finding stage of Transportation 2020, which itself represents the first ever attempt to develop a national consensus surface transportation policy.

Cold War history has emphasized the division of Europe into two warring camps with separate ideologies and little in common. This volume presents an alternative perspective by suggesting that there were transnational networks bridging the gap and connecting like-minded people on both sides of the divide. Long before the fall of the Berlin Wall, there were institutions, organizations, and individuals who brought people from the East and the West together, joined by shared professions, ideas, and sometimes even through marriage. The volume aims at proving that the post-WWII histories of Western and Eastern Europe were entangled by looking at cases involving France, Denmark, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, and others.

"Beyond Mobility" also seeks to rethink how projects are planned and designed in cities and suburbs at multiple geographic scales, from micro-designs such as parklets to corridors and city-regions. The book closes with a reflection on the opportunities and challenges in moving beyond mobility, with attention to emerging technologies such as self-driving cars and ride-hailing services and social equity topics such as accessibility, livability, and affordability.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA's) Office of Program Development and Evaluation (OPDE) conducts research and evaluation projects dealing with human attitudes, behaviors, and failures (motor vehicle crashes). This compendium is an annotated bibliography of 10-year's worth of behavioral research sponsored by NHTSA and conducted by OPDE. It provides a brief description of nearly two hundred OPDE projects past, present, and on-going. The compendium also includes information on how individual reports can be obtained.

This report addresses the current and future problems with the U.S. transportation system. The U.S. Dept. of Transportation (DOT) assembled a team of international and external experts to conduct a comprehensive examination of the system. This team shared key findings and solicited feedback in six public webinar sessions that drew 1,300 participants, including engineers, researchers, transportation planners, pilots, truck drivers, transit operators, safety advocates and disability rights advocates, among others. The report reveals that, if the U.S. does not change its approach to transportation, our transit systems, highways and airports will be impossibly gridlocked. This draft document was published to widen the scope of public feedback and discourse.
