Northern New Mexico holds a living tradition and folklore dealing with witchcraft that is beginning to die out as the older generations pass away. The author has compiled 150 firsthand accounts of supernatural experiences and traditional stories from the people of the Pecos Valley. The text is bilingual in Spanish and English with glossaries of regional Spanish words and supernatural terms.

A Hispanic and Latino presence in what is now the United States goes back to Spanish settlement in the sixteenth century in Florida and the progressive U.S. conquest of the Spanish-controlled territory of California and the Southwest by 1853 and the Gadsden Purchase. Mexicans in this newly American territory had to struggle to hold on to their land. The overlooked history and the debates over new immigration from Mexico and Central America are illuminated by this first state-by-state history of people termed Latinos or Hispanics. Much of this information is hard to find and has never been researched before. Students and other readers will be able to trace the Latino presence through time per state through a chronology and historical overview and read about noteworthy Latinos in the state and the cultural contributions Latinos have made to communities in that state. Taken together, a more complete picture of Latinos emerges. This collection contains poems composed during the years 1925 through 1932 and gathered privately by the poet Fray (or Friar) Angélico Chávez of New Mexico who gained wide renown as an artist and man of letters. Written in English (save for a handful composed in Latin and Spanish), these poems were grouped by Fray Angélico himself under the headings of Cantares de Cibola (verse on Southwestern themes); Cantares de María (poems about and to the Virgin Mary); Cantares Franciscanos (on St. Francis and the Franciscan order); and Cantares Varios (on diverse subjects, primarily religious but including, for example, a "Sonnet on Reading Macbeth" and the lyric "To a Diminutive Chickadee"). Longer works in the collection include "A Litany of Pueblos" and the six-part "Vignettes from the Life of Saint Anthony."

Thus are born rites, rituals & religions. A rite can be a prescribed religious or other solemn ceremony or act it can be a social custom or practice, or even a mundane conventional act. A ritual can be the established form for a ceremony, the order of words used for example; a ritual observance can be either a system of ceremonial acts or actions, or an act or series of acts regularly repeated in a set precise manner. Religion generally encompasses a socio-cultural system of designated behaviors and practices, morals, beliefs, worldviews, texts, sanctified places, prophecies, ethics, or organizations, that relates humanity to supernatural, transcendental, and spiritual elements. Religion is a set of beliefs, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances (rites and rituals).
