This annotated bibliography of more than 500 recommended books meets the needs of teachers and librarians for reading materials for young adults for whom English is a second language. Laura McCaffery, who has many years of experience with collection development of ESL materials for young adults, has selected the best books on a variety of topics to meet curriculum and personal interest needs of young adults. Most of the books selected were published between 1992 and 1998. The bibliography is organized by topic: adventure, mystery, and suspense; biographies; career, workplace, life skills, and parenting; folktales, myths, poetry, and classics; ethnic diversity; history and geography; nature and science; and sports. Indexes by author, subject, title, and ethnic group make searching easy. Mainstreamed ESL students can use these books to better understand and make use of regular textbooks. Special ESL classes can use the recommended books as part of regular instruction. Most of the books recommended are for the intermediate or advanced beginner reading level in English, but some very easy books are also included. Most of the books are suitable for all learners from grades five through adult. Each entry contains a complete bibliographical citation, Fry Reading Level, Interest Level, Library of Congress subjects for cataloging, and a 50 to 200 word annotation describing the book and how it can be used by the librarian or teacher who is working with patrons or students. A list of distributors of print and nonprint ESL materials completes the work.

It provides an overview of key education trends affecting school library collections, such as digital textbooks, instructional improvement systems, STEM priorities, and open education resource (OER) use and reuse. Topics of discussion include the new AASL standards as they relate to the collection; the idea of crowd sourcing in collection development; and current trends in the school library profession, such as Future Ready Libraries and new standards from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Each chapter has been updated and revised with new material, and particular emphasis is placed on disaster preparedness and response as they pertain to policies, circulation, preservation, and moving or closing a collection. This edition also includes updates to review of curation and community analysis principles as they affect the development of the library collection.

This book presents an evidence-based framework for understanding the literacy needs of adolescents. The premise is that educators and other critical stakeholders need to understand evidence-based principles in order to develop effective curriculum to meet the needs of diverse learners. Recommendations are provided for middle and secondary education, professional development, teacher education research and policy. At the center of the book are Eight Guiding Principles developed by the authors through a process that included an extensive review of research and policy literature in literacy and related fields, a comparison of National Standards documents, and visits to the classrooms of 28 middle and high school teachers across the United States. The Principles are broad enough to encompass a variety of contexts and student needs, yet specific enough to offer real support to those involved in program development or policy decisions. They provide an overarching structure that districts and teachers can use to develop site-specific curriculum that is both research-based and designed to meet the needs of the learners for whom they are responsible. Important Text Features: Organized to help readers understand empirically supported principles of practice that can be used to address literacy concerns in today's schools, each chapter that addresses one of the eight Principles follows a similar format: * The Principle is presented along with a brief explanation of the research base and a sample of national standards that support it. * One or more case examples spanning a wide variety of disciplines, grade levels, and local conditions - provide an in-depth look at the Principle in action. * A well-known adolescent literacy expert offers a response to each case example, giving readers an informed view of the importance of the Principle, how it is enacted in the cases, and examples of other work related to the Principle. Discussion questions are provided that can be used for individual reflection or group discussion. Principled Practices for Adolescent Literacy is intended as a text for pre-service and in-service upper-elementary, middle and high school literacy methods courses and graduate courses related to adolescent literacy, and as a resource for school district personnel, policymakers and parents.
