Capital Requirements, Disclosure, and Supervision in the European Insurance Industry provides an in-depth analysis of Solvency II's issues by combining both a theoretical approach and evidence of the empirical implications and effects on the European insurance industry.

This report offers a comprehensive overview of the developments in the European insurance market over the last decade. It also examines the regulatory initiatives undertaken by the relevant international organizations (IAIS, IAA IASB) in order to develop a global risk-sensitive solvency regime for insurance companies. The authors focus in particular on the ongoing developments of the new European solvency regime (known as Solvency II) and the issues addressed by the proposed EU directives on insurance groups and conglomerates.

This paper provides an update on the German insurance sector and an analysis of certain key aspects of the regulatory and supervisory regime. It includes an analysis of German practice in relation to selected Insurance Core Principles in the context of a wider discussion of key issues in regulation and supervision. Macroprudential policies, tools and supervision have become important since the last financial crisis. This book addresses general and methodological issues and provides a framework for the analysis of macroprudential policies and supervision in insurance. It focuses on policy related issues and global level aspects of macroprudential in insurance.

Ireland’s insurance sector is characterized by high penetration and density in both the life and the non-life sector, which, however, stems largely from outward cross-border business (Table 2). In terms of premiums, Ireland hosts the fourth largest insurance sector in the European Union (EU), and assets managed by the insurance industry amount to 117 percent of the GDP, compared to 72 percent for the EU average. The large majority of Irish insurers are subsidiaries of international groups and often have significant interlinkages with related entities within the same group. Extensive intra-group financial links could expose local entities to concentration and other risks. Cross-border business plays an essential role, and Irish insurers hold relevant market shares in other EU member states. Many firms operate on an ‘outward’ cross-border basis, so that in total less than 30 percent of premiums is written in Ireland.

This volume focuses on transparency as the guiding principle for insurance regulation and supervisory law. All chapters were written by experts in their respective fields, who address transparency in a wide range of European and non-European jurisdictions. Each chapter reviews the transparency principles applicable in the jurisdiction discussed. While the European jurisdictions reflect different facets of the principle as emerging from EU law on insurance, the principle has developed quite differently in other jurisdictions.
