Careers For Students With Special Educational Needs

This book addresses in detail a range of issues in connection with preparing individuals with disabilities or other special needs for gaining employment and planning a career path beyond school. It presents strategies for personnel preparation, parent education, effective programs for career development and transitions, policies and policy research, and useful tools for assessment and intervention. The clear explanations of essential theories, research findings, policies, and practices for career development ensure that readers gain a deeper understanding of all the issues involved. Most importantly, they will learn several strategies that can be used to prepare students for employment within global and Asia-Pacific regional contexts.

This guide presents a collection of ideas for activities to encourage students and other individuals to explore careers in special education and related services. After a brief introduction, activities to increase disability awareness are described. These include: a disability awareness day/week, a work day, a social event, child care, a buddy system, and volunteering. Next, activities to foster career awareness are suggested. These include: career awareness presentations, field trips, serving as a recreation program aide, serving as a student aide or peer tutor, and establishing a student club. The decision to go to college is a big one. It signifies a transition into young adulthood and the increasing expectations for independence that can feel exciting, liberating, and daunting! For students with disabilities this transition may be even more challenging. Despite the challenges, more and more students with disabilities are attending postsecondary colleges and universities. While this is certainly encouraging, students with disabilities are less likely to successfully complete their postsecondary programs when compared with their general population peers. So, what do we do? We can learn from our successes during early education and from successful postsecondary programs, taking what we have learned and bring these lessons to scale so that fully inclusive postsecondary programs are available for all students with special education needs. This text reviews the current scene in careers education and examines a range of different approaches in practice. It seeks to show how staff can use and adapt these ideas to implement change and improve careers education.

SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS WORK TO help children who need special assistance. They instruct students at all grade levels who face a vast array of developmental, learning, physical, mental, and emotional disabilities and issues. However, the work is mentally and physically challenging. Special needs children require more attention than other students and present more discipline issues. It can be frustrating to work with a child for months without seeing significant progress on skills that most children master easily. Dealing with parents, fellow teachers and school administrators can also be difficult when they do not understand the nuances of handling a disabled child. Consequently, burnout and turnover rates are higher among special education teachers than in the general teaching profession. Becoming a special education teacher requires at least a bachelor's degree and, for public schools and many private schools, certification by a state licensing body. Some states also require a master's degree for teaching special needs children. Many special education teachers choose to obtain their master's degree because the additional training helps their career advance more quickly and brings a higher pay rate. A career in special education is not for everyone.
