This booklet of prayers is a comprehensive collection of Catholic prayers you might wish to use on any given day, but NOT with the expectation that you would use every prayer every day, or even that you would use every prayer ever!Prayers are included that are traditionally used at different times of day. For instance, the Morning Offering, the noon Angelus, the 3pm Divine Mercy Chaplet, and night prayers. Also included are prayers for before and after Mass, meals, and work, and various prayers you might wish to offer for other people. You'll find prayers for traditional devotions like a visit to the Blessed Sacrament, and the Rosary. If you are just beginning to include regular prayer in your daily life, it's best to start in a small and manageable way, with perhaps a Morning Offering and Grace Before Meals. Then, as you become more used to the habit, you can slowly add in new prayers and devotions, like a noon Angelus, a daily family Rosary, and an Examination of Conscience and Act of Contrition at night. If you are able to add daily Mass, a Visit to the Blessed Sacrament, and/or the Sacrament of Confession to your weekly routine, you can use the included prayers here to help you prepare and focus. For prayers, hymns, blessings, and devotions that pertain to particular feast days and seasons of the liturgical calendar, see the Catholic All Year monthly prayer booklets. For an introduction to the concept of liturgical living in the home, and ideas for how to bring the Catholic faith into daily life for you and your family, please see The Catholic All Year Compendium: Liturgical Living for Real Life.

October is the month of the Holy Rosary. Pious tradition tells us that Our Lady herself gave the concept of the Rosary as we recite it now to St. Dominic in an apparition in 1214. For hundreds of years, the Rosary has been recommended by popes, saints, and Our Lady in further apparitions.Although it often feels difficult-impossible even-to say the Rosary well, especially in a family, it is ALWAYS worth the attempt. I take great solace in this quote from Fr. Mark Kirby: "The devil, of course, hates the Rosary, precisely because it changes hearts, detaches from sin, attaches to the all-pure Mother of God, and leads to conversion. One of the ploys he uses to deter people from praying it is to suggest that unless one can pray it well, i.e. perfectly, one shouldn't pray it at all. I would suggest, rather, that the Rosary, even prayed badly, is better than no Rosary at all." The current Manual of Indulgences encourages the recitation of the Rosary by offering a plenary indulgence, subject to the usual conditions, available to the faithful every day of the year. To gain it, the Rosary must be recited in a church, a family, a religious community, or a group of friends. The five decades must be recited without interruption, and meditation on the mysteries of the Rosary must be added to the vocal prayers. Otherwise, the indulgence becomes partial. In this month's booklet, you'll find instructions and all the necessary prayers for the Rosary, as well as prayers and Bible readings in honor of October saints including St. Thrse of Lisieux, the Guardian Angels, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Luke, and Pope St. John Paul II. For Halloween a.k.a All Hallows Eve, which kicks off next month's devotion to the Holy Souls in Purgatory, you'll find prayers and poems, perfect for families and friends who want to revel in the macabre Truths of the long Catholic tradition of Halloween . . . that we will each die, and should live our lives accordingly.

Best Review at the Catholic Press Association Convention Studies of young American Catholics over the last three decades suggest a growing crisis in the Catholic Church: compared to their elders, young Catholics are looking to the Church less as they form their identities, and fewer of them can even explain what it means to be Catholic and why that matters. Young Catholic America, the latest book based on the groundbreaking National Study of Youth and Religion, explores a crucial stage in the life of Catholics. Drawing on in-depth surveys and interviews of Catholics and ex-Catholics ages 18 to 23--a demographic commonly known as early "emerging adulthood"--leading sociologist Christian Smith and his colleagues offer a wealth of insight into the wide variety of religious practices and beliefs among young Catholics today, the early influences and life-altering events that lead them to embrace the Church or abandon it, and how being Catholic affects them as they become full-fledged adults. Beyond its rich collection of statistical data, the book includes vivid case studies of individuals spanning a full decade, as well as insight into the twentieth-century events that helped to shape the Church and its members in America. An innovative contribution to what we know about religion in the United States and the evolving Catholic Church, Young Catholic America is the definitive source for anyone seeking to understand what it means to be young and Catholic in America today.
