Clinical endocrinology is a fascinating field requiring the challenging combination of broad pathophysiological interest and specific expertise in the field of endocrinology, thereby occupying a common ground between biochemistry, physiology and clinical medicine. In the majority of cases the clinician's notion of the presence of an endocrine disease is largely based upon pattern recognition, in which physical changes play an important role. Therefore many color illustrations have been included throughout the text. In addition there are many full color graphs and illustrations of diagnostic imaging and pathology. With over 350 illustrations the book represents a richly illustrated text on the diseases of endocrine glands. For each gland there is an introductory section on the relevant morphology and physiology, followed by descriptions of the disorders of the gland. When endocrine diseases are quite different in dogs and cats, separate descriptions are given for these species. Protocols for function tests and emergency treatments are presented in the last chapters. Consequently the book provides the user with both comprehensive descriptions and quick references. The book has been written by leading clinicians in the field, with contributions from two biochemists, a radiologist and pathologist. As such a valuable textbook for veterinary students and practitioners has been compiled to fulfil the need for an up-to-date and complete book on endocrine diseases of dogs and cats.

No other comprehensive small animal veterinary medicine book exists with a comparable amount of relevant illustrated material. This new third edition continues and expands on the revolutionary approach of the previous two editions, now including more than 1,850 highly valuable clinical colour photographs, diagrams, and tables. The book is now divided into five color-coded sections – General Approach, Disease of Specific Organ Systems, Multisystemic Disorders, Elements of Therapy and Case Studies. As with the first and second editions of this book the overriding principle of succinct, yet comprehensive text presented in a clear format with an abundance of good quality images remains. Section I: General Approach is completely new and covers medical history and client communication, and common clinical problems. Section II: Specific Organ Systems is organized by body system with chapters structured in a systematic manner that include the definition for each disorder, its causes, clinical features, differential diagnoses, diagnostic methodology, treatment and prognosis, providing readers with easy access to important clinical information. New to this section are chapters covering diseases of the oral cavity and teeth, approach to thoracic radiographs, approach to abdominal radiographs, and disorders of hemostasis. Section III: Multisystemic Disorders covers revised and updated chapters including clinical toxicology, infectious diseases, and immunologic disorders. Section IV: Elements of Therapy covers therapies such as fluid therapy, pain management, nutrition of the critically ill dog and cat and a new chapter on management of the obese dog or cat. Section V: Case Studies includes over 25 case studies that enable the reader to relate the knowledge gained in the book to clinical cases seen in practice. Written by board-certified experts with several case contributions by clinicians in advanced phases of resident training, topics were carefully selected to make this a valuable resource to the general practitioner and also to small animal interns and veterinary students.

Since publication of the third edition in 2004 there have been important advances. Several endocrine disorders, such as feline acromegaly and hyperaldosteronism, have risen in importance. The use of diet and novel insulins in diabetic cats, and new drugs such as trilostane and methimazole, which were briefly mentioned in previous editions are now considered routine. In addition, the genetic risks associated with many disorders have been elucidated. A new chapter presents the principles of interpreting endocrine test results and discusses how test performance is assessed in relation to diagnostic confidence. The central section on glands and their diseases is presented in a standard format -- detailing physiology, aetiology, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment - to aid information retrieval. The final section has been rewritten to focus on solving clinical and clinicopathological abnormalities with an endocrine dimension.
