Coastal Geomorphological Investigations In Latin America

This book introduces selected contributions from the GEGAL (Spanish acronym for Latin American Geoarchaeological Studies Group) Workshop held at La Paloma Beach, Uruguay, with a focus on Coastal Geoarchaeology, and an attendance of more than 50 researchers, students and professionals from several Latin American countries. The contributions were selected in order to encompass the vast array of environmental, geomorphological and archaeological contexts comprised in the geographical frame of Latin America. Topics covered through the chapters include specific issues such as human occupation and fluvial dynamic processes in mountain and lowland environments, methodological developments in dating methods, taphonomy and chemical proxies, as well as landscape modification by anthropogenic disturbances. As the first compilation of Coastal Geoarchaeology for Latin America, this book is intended to become a useful tool for students, researchers and professionals from related fields, as it comprises not only the regional state of the art, but also new insights and developments which can be potentially applied to other contexts world wide.

This book presents varied geomorphological topics and planetary studies from different geomorphological regions analysed by young researchers from Latin America, from Costa Rica to southern Argentina, from the mountains to the oceans, and from the Caribbean to the Scotia tectonic plates. The six chapters included in this book originate from presentations made during the “IAG Central and South American Webinar” carried on in March 2021 for the commemoration of the “Geomorphology Week”, promoted by the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) and coordinated by the invited book editors. The chapters develop topics related to landforms and geomorphological processes originated by modern tectonics along a transform tectonic plate boundary, by cryo-snowy environments in the drier Central Andes, by fluvial and littoral processes in the Brazilian inland and the Atlantic coast, and by high runoff generated by storm-cells driving into mountainous and wooded terrains. New insights on Mars water features research are also included in the book. Several chapters refer to risk assessment for society or resource management considerations; other chapters refer to present or recent geomorphological processes but others do so to those developed in the Quaternary.

The original idea of this book started when we were making a residual fluxes study of the Paranagua Coastal Lagoon (Brazil) near the colonial town of Guaraque~aba.Among the beautiful mangroves of this Brazilian National Park, between profile and profile, we wondered why South American estuaries were little known in the international arena. Besides, most of the papers published in the literature are based on biological research. Practically nothing is known about their geomorphology and dynamics. That night, while we were walking along the hilly streets of the town, we decided that the only way to have an idea about the degree of advance in the geomorphology and dynamics of our estuaries was to ask the proper South American researchers to write review articles about the estuaries in which they were working or about the gen eral state of the art of the Geomorphology and Physical Oceanography of the estuar ies of his/her country. The book grew from then on. Although initially many scien tists offer to write a chapter, we ran into the same problem these researchers have to publish in journals, they felt that their English was not good enough and withdrew. However, we are very satisfy about the number and quality of the contributions which also passed a very strong review process.

This book presents selected research highlights from the Seventh Argentine Geomorphology and Quaternary Studies Congress, hosted at Puerto Madryn, Northern Patagonia, Argentina by the Argentine Association of Geomorphology and Quaternary Studies (AACYG). The congress included special sessions, symposia, invited lectures and posters on the following topics: Quaternary stratigraphy and geochronology, paleontology (diatoms, mollusks, foraminifera, palynology, phytoliths, paleobotany, vertebrates), dendrochronology, climate change, paleoclimate, Pampean Quaternary paleolimnology, paleomagnetism, environmental magnetism, hydrogeochemical processes, geoarchaeology, geomorphology, structural geology and neotectonics, paleosurfaces, volcanism, geological hazards, assets, geomorphosites, and digital mapping. The Scientific Committee of the Congress has selected the papers published in this volume from more than 150 contributions in many different disciplines.
