More than 25 years have elapsed since the first application of immunofluorescent techniques in dermatology. These techniques have shed light on many problems concerning skin disorders. Microorganisms, antigens and antibodies, complements and enzymes have been observed in both intracellular and extracellular tissues. This is the first comprehensive atlas on dermato-immuno-histocytology; it collects the most outstanding studies and accompanying photographs carried out by 83 Japanese dermatologists.

Although hair is not essential for health and survival in humans as it is in other mammals, changes in hair growth density, pattern or alterations in its color and texture can often lead to distress. In addition, these types of changes can indicate underlying systemic disease, including endocrine, genetic, metabolic, or nutritional and psychiatric disorders. An Atlas of Hair and Scalp Diseases explores the enormous range of changes in hair and its growth. The atlas contains over 200 carefully selected color illustrations accompanied by concise clinical information on diagnosis, practical management, and recent advances in our knowledge and understanding of each disorder. In nine chapters, it provides a comprehensive view of the basic physiology of hair growth, congenital and hair shaft abnormalities, including cosmetic damage to hair, loss and overgrowth of hair, and abnormalities of the scalp, including inflammatory, infective and malignant skin disease. While not life-threatening, hair and scalp disease are widespread and cause much distress. Physicians regularly see patients suffering from these problems. A one-of-a-kind book, An Atlas of Hair and Scalp Diseases provides access to a comprehensive collection of physical signs and concise guidance to their significance that will aid in quick and correct diagnoses and improved management and care for patients.

This is the second edition of a book first published 15 years ago as "Dermatologic Drug Directory". The book was originally intended as a guide to the drugs required to treat skin diseases. However this new edition is far more of a pictorial aid to the diagnosis of common skin diseases. The first section of the book does still discuss Systemic Drugs, Topical Therapy, and the Side Effects of Drugs, but it then provides a large lavishly illustrated section on the Instant Diagnostic Criteria and Treatment of Common Skin Disorders. This book will be useful to students being introduced to dermatology for the first time, and also to practitioners who can refer to it in their day to day consultations.

I have been a student of Sjogren's syndrome for virtually all of my professional life. My education in this disease began in 1962 when I arrived at the National Institutes of Health to begin a Clinical Asso ciateship with Dr. Joseph J. Bunim. Bunim introduced me to a pat ient with Sjogren's syndrome of 8 years duration who had devel oped malignant lymphoma 6 months previously. He told me that there were other such patients. I obtained serum samples from these patients and studied them by the then new technique of immuno electrophoresis. We observed that an initial hypergammaglobulin emia could progressively decline to hypogammaglobulinemia with loss of autoantibodies. One patient in this initial series had macrog lobulinemia. We published this report and suggested that the auto immunity predisposed to the malignant transformation. Thus began my love affair with this disease. In those days many rheumatologists considered Sjogren's syn drome simply a variant of rheumatoid arthritis. It's curious that two decades ago there was little confusion between Sjogren's syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus, whereas today there is great con fusion. There is still a great need for internationally agreed upon di agnostic criteria, which merely illustrates once again the difficulty of accurate diagnosis in our profession. The multidisciplinary aspects of Sjogren's syndrome require au thorities in several areas of medicine. The various chapter contribu tors are experts in their field and have often put aside other respon sibilities to complete their contributions and not delay publication.
