Color your very own version of A Child's History of England by Charles Dickens! For young Victorians, Charles Dickens traced the history of his country from the mysterious Druids and noble King Alfred to Henry VIII and the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Anecdotes and colorful stories pepper this collection of historical vignettes, written with the taleteller's usual panache. Dickens' witty, opinionated views on English history also shed light on his own political and religious views. To whet his children's appetites for more substantial works of history, the author dedicated this lively narrative to them. British schoolchildren studied the book well into the twentieth century, and it remains a delight for all ages. In her own words, Alice Munro described it as "the first glimpse I ever had of history." It has the charm and recklessness and exaggeration of a spellbinding fairy tale. Color your very own version of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens! A Christmas Carol was one of Dickens' most popular and enduring stories, despite being written under financial duress. Ebenezer Scrooge is a cold, heartless miser who doesn't care about love, family, or Christmas. Aside from money, he doesn't care about anything else. On Christmas Eve, three ghosts visit him: Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet To Come. A profound change was brought about by these encounters for Scrooge. Scrooge learned the importance of family, love, and kindness. He reformed his ways and spent the rest of his life trying to make up for his misdeeds. The moral of the story is that kindness and love are more important than money and wealth. A Christmas Carol is considered by historians to have greatly influenced modern sentimental Christmas traditions. The novel has been adapted to many different forms of media, from stage plays to film and television. It has also become a beloved holiday classic, with its themes of kindness and generosity. It first appeared in serial form in Household Words, running from January 25, 1851 to December 10, 1853. Dickens also published the work in book form in three volumes: the first volume on December 20, 1851; the second, December 25, 1852; and the third, December 24, 1853. Although the volumes were published in December, each was postdated the following year. Dickens dedicated the book to "My own dear children, whom I hope it may help, bye and bye, to read with interest larger and better books on the same subject". The history covered the period between 50 BC and 1689, ending with a chapter summarising events from then until the accession of Queen Victoria. A Child's History was included in the curricula of British School children well into the 20th century, with successive editions published from 1851 to World War II.
