Excerpt from Works of Art in the United States Capitol Building: Including Biographies of the Artists For the purpose of preserving in convenient form historical data relating to the artists whose works have been given a place in the United States Capitol, this compilation has been prepared. So far as possible the biographies included have been obtained from the artists represented or from their relatives. In instances where information has not been obtainable from such sources, it has been secured from various art publications, biographies found in other works, from the records in the Capitol, and from statements of persons having a personal acquaintance with the artists represented. In no instance has a comparative estimate of the relative standing of the artists been attempted. Such comparison belongs to the purposes of art criticism. A subject so largely dependent upon personal opinion is not properly included in the intent of this compilation. It may not, however, be out of place to make some reference to the works of art in the United States Capitol. The collection includes portraits by John Singleton Copley, Benjamin West, Gilbert Stuart, Chester Harding, Charles Willson Peale, Thomas Sully, Rembrandt Peale, John Vanderlyn, Ary Scheffer, John Neagle, and John Singer Sargent. Among historical painters are works by John Trumbull, John Vanderlyn, Robert W. Weir, W. H. Powell, J. G. Chapman, Seth Eastman, James Walker, and A. G. Heaton. Landscape painters are represented by examples of the work of Bierstadt and Moran; allegorical and decorative painters by works of Constantino Brumidi, Emanuel Leutze, and Filippo Costaggini. Relegated to the Crypt of the Capitol building for 76 years, the Portrait Monument has stood in the Rotunda since 1997. Often referred to as the Suffrage Statue, it memorializes pioneering feminists Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony and is the sole sculptural representation of women in the Rotunda. From its conception by sculptor Adelaide Johnson as three separate busts to its laborious execution and celebrated placement in the Rotunda, the seven-ton sculpture has provoked frustration, jubilation and hullabaloo. Drawing on diaries, letters, newspapers and historic photographs, this first-ever history of the monument explores the controversy, myths and artistry behind this neoclassical yet unconventional work of art.
