Is consciousness an epiphenomenal happenstance of this particular universe? Or does the very concept of a universe depend upon its presence? Does consciousness merely perceive reality, or does reality depend upon it? Did consciousness simply emerge as an effect of evolution? Or was it, in some sense, always "out there" in the world? These questions and more, are addressed in this special edition. According to ancient traditions there is an organic unity of existence. Yet science have shown our world as mechanical and highly disconnected until now. Through a synthesis of the most recent scientific research in theoretical physics, evolution and cognition, Eva Deli formulates an organically unified cosmos: particles of matter, the mind and the whole cosmos fit together as Russian dolls. In this coherent and intuitive world view to understand particles is to understand the mind, and it is to understand the universe. Material interaction is the source of a cosmological evolution that increases complexity and culminates in the emergence of the intelligent mind. Characteristics of elementary particles can be recognized in conscious processes. For example, human decision making can be best described by quantum probability, allowing quantum theory to be used for search-engine optimization. The context of judgments and decisions corresponds to quantum interference of elementary matter particles. The mind also forms a unified experience in spite of the cacophony of ideas and sensory stimuli it receives from the environment. These and other similar findings characterize a mental elementary particle, which interacts by elementary forces: called emotions. Emotions are the emotional equivalents of gravity, electromagnetism, the nuclear weak and strong forces. For the first time, the scientific classification of emotions becomes possible. The indivisible, self-contained, and self-regulating universe also shows elementary particle characteristics. Thus, the material, mental elementary particles and the universe have identical energy structures and analogue operational principles. and together form a fractal structure of vastly different energy levels and sizes: the organically interconnected, complex universe. The hypothesis' fresh approach has the potential to ameliorate and mend the existing schism between religion and the sciences, and its main tenets can be verified by technically feasible experiments. The recognition that material particles, the mind and the universe are analogue quantum systems, a radically new physical world view emerges, which if proven correct, can point toward potential applications in physics and medicine. The hypothesis can explain many currently unexplained phenomena in physics, evolution, neurology and the social sciences. For example the hypothesis defines time, it redefines entropy and it introduces a hypothesis for gravity. Its new vision for evolution and emotions has implications for social sciences and even economy. Videos posted on the Author's page facilitate understanding some key concepts.

The Physical Nature of Consciousness contains twelve chapters that discuss recent and new perspectives on the relation between modern physics and consciousness. Stuart Hameroff opens with an extended and updated exposition of the Penrose/Hameroff Orch-OR model, and subsequently addresses recent criticisms of quantum approaches to the brain. Evan Walker presents his view on consciousness from the perspective of a new approach to the integration of quantum theory and relativity. Friedrich Beck elaborates on the Beck/Eccles quantum approach to consciousness. Karl Pribram puts the holographic view on consciousness in perspective of his life long work. Peter Marcer and Edgar Mitchell explain the relevance of quantum holography for consciousness. Gordon Globus discusses the relation between postmodern philosophical theories and quantum consciousness. Chris Clarke develops a theory in terms of a specific type of formal logic to reconcile the phenomenology of consciousness with the physical world. Ilya Prigogine summarizes his view on complexity, and on the future of quantum theory, which goes beyond the present formalism, and goes on to comment on the problem of consciousness. Matti Pitkanen identifies the place for consciousness in a unifying topological geometro-dynamics theory. Colin McGinn argues against classical materialism. Dick Bierman gives an overview of anomalous phenomena. He identifies a decline effect, and discusses different possible interpretations. Philip Van Loocke closes the volume with a discussion on how deep teleology in cellular systems may relate to consciousness. (Series A)

The modern materialist approach to life has conspicuously failed to explain such central mind-related features of our world as consciousness, intentionality, meaning, and value. This failure to account for something so integral to nature as mind, argues philosopher Thomas Nagel, is a major problem, threatening to unravel the entire naturalistic world picture, extending to biology, evolutionary theory, and cosmology. Since minds are features of biological systems that have developed through evolution, the standard materialist version of evolutionary biology is fundamentally incomplete. And the cosmological history that led to the origin of life and the coming into existence of the conditions for evolution cannot be a merely materialist history, either. An adequate conception of nature would have to explain the appearance in the universe of materially irreducible conscious minds, as such. Nagel's skepticism is not based on religious belief or on a belief in any definite alternative. In Mind and Cosmos, he does suggest that if the materialist account is wrong, then principles of a different kind may also be at work in the history of nature, principles of the growth of order that are in their logical form teleological rather than mechanistic. In spite of the great achievements of the physical sciences, reductive materialism is a world view ripe for displacement. Nagel shows that to recognize its limits is the first step in looking for alternatives, or at least in being open to their possibility.

Consciousness . . . It is the thing that we are most familiar with, and possibly the thing that is most important to understand. Yet, currently there is no theory of consciousness that solves all of the necessary problems and that is unified with our physical theory of the Universe. This books details a new theory of consciousness that solves the mind-body problem, the irreducibility of consciousness and other philosophical problems, and it is unified with physics. The theory takes from philosophy, physics, psychology, neuroscience and mathematics to provide a complete working theory of consciousness. Despite all of this, the book is written in a concise, enjoyable and easily understandable manner. Some of the topics of the book are: the nature of conscious experience, the causal role for consciousness, how consciousness fits in with the rest of the Universe, free will and determinism, how the brain uses consciousness, paranormal events and out of body experiences, life after death, the definition of a soul, black holes and cosmology, as well as other topics on the nature of the Universe. All of these questions are answered with a philosophically constructed scientific theory utilizing a single, interconnected, framework.
