Covid 19 Forced Innovations

Countries around the world are working to counter the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on their healthcare systems, economies, and industries. This book brings together strategies for the adoption of new technologies and innovation systems which would help re-invigorate social and economic institutions and help communities, especially in the Global South. The book focuses on innovation systems that address health and socioeconomic inequalities in countries such as India, Africa, Brazil, Costa Rica, and others. It looks into the responses of different countries to the shocks inflicted on the economy and health systems by the pandemic from the perspective of government institutions as well as businesses, industries, and communities. The pandemic forced many organizations to embrace various innovative strategies to contain the spread of COVID-19 and ameliorate the lives of people including employees, people from marginalized communities, and low-income groups who have suffered due to the disease. The chapters in this book study innovative interventions and community-based measures which reached many people and paved the way for policies which helped rebuild communities sustainably. This book gives an overview of the shifting paradigm from traditional design techniques and standards to new values and methods that occurred in response to confronting the COVID-19 pandemic. The theoretical studies of the phenomenon of "new normality" in architecture, urbanism and social sciences are a source of knowledge for researchers, professors and students in the fields of architecture, urbanism and interior design. On-site applications of post-COVID-19 structures will be interesting for students, practitioners, developers and city managers. The issue of online design teaching and learning provides a set of practices that can be applied by both educators and trainees. The book also is useful for readers who are interested in recent trends in architecture and interior design: it provides a deep analysis of recent changes in architecture, which aim to make the environment disease-free and the space habitable during the long periods of lockdown.

To examine the drivers of innovation, this paper studies the global R&D effort to fight the deadliest diseases and presents four results. We find: (1) global pharmaceutical R&D activity—measured by clinical trials—typically follows the ‘law of diminishing effort’: i.e. the elasticity of R&D effort with respect to market size is about 1⁄2 in the cross-section of diseases; (2) the R&D response to COVID-19 has been a major exception to this law, with the number of COVID-19 trials being 7 to 20 times greater than that implied by its market size; (3) the aggregate short-term elasticity of science and innovation can be very large, as demonstrated by aggregate flow of clinical trials increasing by 38% in 2020, with limited crowding out of trials for non-COVID diseases; and (4) public institutions and government-led incentives were a key driver of the COVID-19 R&D effort—with public research institutions accounting for 70 percent of all COVID-19 clinical trials globally and being 10 percentage points more likely to conduct a COVID-19 trial relative to private firms. Overall, while economists are naturally in favor of market size as a driving force for innovation (i.e.“if the market size is sufficiently large then innovation will happen”), our work suggests that scaling up global innovation may require a broader perspective on the drivers of innovation—including early-stage incentives, non-monetary incentives, and public institutions.

COVID-19 has made differential impacts on countries and communities around the world. China, where COVID-19 started, has developed and utilized different types of technologies, including both traditional and disruptive technologies, to address the pandemic risks. Also, there have been many innovations in applying technologies in different contexts during the pandemic as well as in the post-pandemic recovery and preparedness aspects.
