Aquinas’ theology can be understood only if one comes to grips with his metaphysics of being. The relevance of this perspective is exhibited in his treatment of topics like creation, goodness, happiness, truth, freedom of the will, the unity of the human being, prayer and providence, God’s personhood, divine love, God and violence, God’s unknowablility, the Incarnation, the Trinity, God’s existence, theological language and even laughter. This book endeavors to treat these questions in a clear and convincing language.

In the De potentia, Thomas Aquinas runs a series of disputations on the power of God. The treatise considers ten questions related to God's power to create external things, namely the universe, angels, and human beings. His explanation of creation here is the most developed treatment found in any of his writings, but the principal purpose of the work is to analyze the internal life of God--that is, the Trinity. According to Aquinas, we predicate the Persons of the Trinity as relations, not as absolute things, and he examines the processions of the Son and the Holy Spirit in the light of reason. The complete De potentia is a very long document. In this new translation, Fr. Richard Regan offers an abridged version that passes over some of the full text while retaining what is most important when it comes to following the flow of Aquinas's thought.

In the thirteenth century, public disputation was not only a sort of ecclesiastical tournament arranged for an exceptional and solemn occasion, but also an integral part of a philosophical and theological course of study. At the University of Paris, for instance, public disputations were held frequently throughout the year. They were held more or less intermittently by other masters, but by Thomas with great frequency and regularity, especially during the three years of his first professorship at Paris when he held them twice a week during term. Thomas' disputations fall into seven series: on Truth; on the Power of God; on Evil; on the Incarnate Word; on Spiritual Creatures; and on the Virtures. These disputations on the power of God were written when Aquinas was about 40 and at the height of his intellectual powers. The exact time and place are unknown though it is likely that they were offered in either Anagni (1259-1261) or Rome (1265-67).
