During the years 1987 and 1988 we published a series of articles on the molding of thermoplastics materials in the magazine British Plastics and Rubber (B P & R). These articles were very well received and we also received a large number of requests for reprints. In order to cater for what is obviously a need in the thermoplas tics molding industry, we therefore brought the information together and produced it in the form of a book. We can only hope that it serves you well and that you find the information useful. We in turn would like to thank the editor of the magazine B P & R for helping us in this matter. Thanks are also due to our many friends and colleagues throughout the molding industry for their useful help and advice, in particular the company Moldflow (Europe) limited deserve a special mention as they allowed us to extract information from their extensive data base.

Thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) have the elastic behaviour of rubber and the processability of thermoplastics. The Freedonia Group has forecast that demand will expand by 6.4% per year to around 2.15 million tons in 2006. There is potential for these new, exciting materials to expand into the much larger thermoset rubber markets. This review includes comparisons between the two material types. Green materials derived from renewable resources are increasingly being advocated for sustainable development due to rising environmental consciousness, waste management difficulties, depleting fossil resources, and rising oil prices to name a few. Renewable green resources such as starchy and cellulose polymers, natural fibers, vegetable oils, wood bark, cotton, wool, and silk have been utilized for food, furniture, and clothing for thousands of years. They have only recently undergone a revival as one of the most cost-effective alternatives to synthetic polymers in a variety of industrial applications, including building and construction, automotive packaging, films, and paper coating as well as biomedical uses. The primary drawbacks of synthetic polymers, such as the release of toxic gases and vapors during incineration and the difficulty in disposing of them, have prompted extensive research on new, green polymeric materials with special focus on the use of biopolymers derived from renewable resources for green composite applications. This book gives a true reflection of the vast area of research in green composites as it has contributions from internationally recognized experts in the field of green polymer materials, representing a wide range of disciplines, backgrounds, and expertise.
