Defining Criteria

The two editors, graduate architects from the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture asked six renowned architects and four well-known artists, all among the latest generation in their field, about their underlying motivation, orientation and stances with respect to architecture and art. The result is inspiring, in-depth reflection, enhanced by quotes, symbolic images and presentations of real projects from the world of architecture and art that underline and symbolize their ideas and reflections. Interviews with the architects Kersten Geers (Office KGDVS, Brussels), François Charbonnet (Made in, Geneva), Go Hasegawa (Tokyo), Anne Holtrop (Bahrain and Amsterdam), Pier Vittorio Aureli and Martino Tattara (DOGMA, Brussels and London), Junya Ishigami (Tokyo) and the artists Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine (film-makers, Paris), Philipp Schaerer (Zurich and Steffisburg), Yuri Ancarani (visual artist and film-maker, Milan), Bas Princen (photographer, Zurich and Rotterdam).

The overall aim of DEFINE is to provide a methodology to define reference conditions for nutrient concentrations in the coastal zone of the Baltic Sea. This will aid the national authorities that surround the Baltic basin in implementing the EU's Water Framework Directive (WFD) by providing decision-makers with a methodology to assess reference conditions and the degree of past and present departure from this state, such that appropriate policy and management measures can be taken at national and European levels. DEFINE adopts a palaeoecological approach grounded on diatom-based transfer functions, which can then be applied to define background total nitrogen (TN) concentrations in estuaries and coastal areas over the entire Baltic Sea. All transfer functions and necessary supporting documentation will be publicly available as a coherent management tool and accessible via the MOLTEN/DEFINE web page (http://craticula.ncl.ac.uk/Molten/jsp/).

Whoever coined the adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" could not have known how important this adage would become. The challenge of altering the health trajectories of poor lifestyle decisions for such behaviors as smoking, drinking and using illicit drugs, violence, dropping out of school, engagement in risky sexual behaviors and crime through prevention research has led to a new discipline, prevention science. Defining Prevention Science covers this emerging field of science: its goals, its conceptual and theoretical foundations, its methods and especially its utility. Not content to simply differentiate the field from its close allies: epidemiology, psychology, neuroscience, sociology, economics, the text explains how these many disciplines enhance each other at both research and intervention levels and how prevention science draws on these biological, behavioral and social sciences to create an innovative knowledge base that has provided cost-effective, evidence-based prevention interventions and policies. To this end, familiar developmental benchmarks are recast in prevention/health promotion context, from the crucial importance of adolescence in encountering and deterring high-risk behaviors to the risks and resiliencies of single-mother families. An international group of contributors offers current findings, up-to-date methods for effective evidence-based interventions and improvements in research technologies in these key areas: Physical, cognitive and emotional vulnerability across the life course. The roles of developmental influences in prevention. Intervention development, delivery and implementation. Bringing the intervention approach to research design. New directions in analytic methods. Cost analysis and policy implications. Advances in Prevention Science: Defining Prevention Science aims to inspire further refinements in the field and encourage communication among researchers in its own and related disciplines, including public health, epidemiology, psychology, and criminology. This is the first volume in the series, Advances in Prevention Science, that provides the framework for other volume that will focus on such issues as: Prevention Science in School Settings: Complex Relationships and Processes; Preventing Crime and Violence and The Prevention of Substance Use.

Philosophers discuss Jerome Wakefield's influential view of mental disorder as "harmful dysfunction," with detailed responses from Wakefield himself. One of the most pressing theoretical problems of psychiatry is the definition of mental disorder. Jerome Wakefield's proposal that mental disorder is "harmful dysfunction" has been both influential and widely debated; philosophers have been notably skeptical about it. This volume provides the first book-length collection of responses by philosophers to Wakefield's harmful dysfunction analysis (HDA), offering a survey of philosophical critiques as well as extensive and detailed replies by Wakefield himself.

Among today's astounding research discoveries, perhaps the most fascinating is the mapping of the human genome and its implications for a vastly improved understanding of how genes affect our physiology and behavior. With that understanding comes a critical need to establish a diagnostic taxonomy for psychiatric illness that is more precise but still clinically relevant. This volume responds to that need. It highlights the shortcomings of current categorical diagnoses, such as those used in DSM-IV, for future research needs in behavioral disorders in general and psychiatric genetics in particular. With a chapter by each distinguished neuroscientist who presented at the 2000 American Psychopathological Association (APPA) meeting, this volume is divided into four sections: Definitional Tensions, which discusses the difficulties with the current categorical diagnostic system; Imaging Psychopathology, which presents research demonstrating how imaging technologies can tremendously improve our illness definitions; Longitudinal Studies, which details what we can learn from epidemiological and other longitudinal studies; and Exploring Alternatives, which discusses the application of dimensional classification systems in genetics research in psychopathology, with a fascinating chapter on using new methodologies for treating subsyndromal or pre-schizophrenia, a taxonomic condition defined herein as "schizotaxia." This unique collection represents a significant step in developing approaches to classification that will lead to more accurate diagnoses and treatments for patients and a broader range of taxonomic options for researchers. As such, it will also be welcomed by psychiatric clinicians and educators, as well as by anyone interested in genetics and how it governs human behavior.
