This third installment of the examination of Dublin - from the Irish Historic Towns Atlas series - traces the history and development of Dublin through the late 18th and early 19th centuries. During this period, many of the city's modern streets were laid out. A collection of 30 loose sheets present a variety of maps and views illustrating Dublin. Large-scale color maps depict the city (within the canals) in 1847 at two different scales, which can be compared with a modern town plan of 2012. Historical maps, illustrations, and paintings are reproduced in a large, high quality format. Thematic maps depict notable elements of the evolving urban landscape. The city's cultural and commercial life is opened up to the reader, with records of brewing and distilling, churches, city estates, and economic growth phases. The maps are accompanied by a detailed text section with topographical information on Dublin's cityscape of factories, schools, and shops at its core, along with an introductory essay on the growth of Dublin from 1756 to 1847. Also included is a CD-ROM of the publication, where the text is word searchable and the maps and images are in high resolution, allowing for detailed examination. The Great Irish Famine of 1845-51 was both one of the most lethal famines in modern history and a watershed in the development of modern Ireland. This book - based on a wide range of little-used sources - demonstrates how the Famine profoundly affected many aspects of Irish life: the relationship between the churches; the nationalist movement; and the relationship with the monarchy. In addition to looking at the role of the government, Kinealy shows the importance of private charity in saving lives. One of the most challenging aspects of the publication is the chapter on food supply, in which Kinealy concludes that, despite the potato blight, Ireland was still producing enough food to feed its people. The long-term impact of the tragedy, notably the way in which it has been remembered and commemorated, is also examined.

Looking past the apparent lack of a sustainable Irish display culture, this book demonstrates that there is a very full story to tell of the way Ireland displayed its art from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century. Ireland on Show analyzes the impact of the display of art as a significant political and cultural feature in the make-up of nineteenth-century Ireland - and in how Ireland was viewed beyond its own shores, in particular in Great Britain and the United States. Fintan Cullen directs much-needed critical attention and analysis to a subject that has been largely overlooked from an Irish perspective. This study moves beyond museums, to address the range of art institutions in Irish cities that displayed art, from the Royal Hibernian Academy, founded in the 1820s, to Hugh Lane's Municipal Art Gallery, opened in Dublin in 1908. Throughout, the book explores the battle between the display of a unionist ethos and a nationalist point of view, a constant that resurfaces over the period. By highlighting the tension between unionist and nationalist viewpoints, Cullen uses the display of art to investigate the complexities of Irish cultural life before the founding of the Free State.
