Cosmeceuticals are the latest additions to the health industry and have an ever-expanding market. They are considered to be a marriage between cosmetics and drugs and are defined as preparations applied on the body that may modify the physiological functions of the skin. However, as more cosmeceuticals are being launched in the market and more types of drugs are incorporated into the formulation, the composition of cosmeceuticals is becoming more complex. Handbook of Cosmeceutical Excipients and their Safeties summarises the current evidence relating to cosmeceuticals' side effects and highlights the important information that practitioners and consumers need to know, as well as ways to avoid the adverse effects of the excipients. Handbook of Cosmeceutical Excipients and their Safeties includes chapters covering topics such as the history of cosmeceuticals and the laws that regulate them, skin permeation, carcinogenicity as a systemic adverse effect and dermatitis as a topical adverse effect. It concludes with an appendix that gives brief information on the potency and permeability of common ingredients in cosmeceuticals. The appendix aims to highlight the maximum allowable quantity of each ingredient to ensure product safety for consumers. The appendix was prepared by compiling the ingredients of 257 products containing more than 500 compounds, collected from a hospital pharmacy in Singapore. - Focuses on the practical aspect of adverse effects from cosmeceuticals - Explains the regulatory framework of cosmeceuticals - Gives an idea of how excipients and drugs in cosmeceuticals enter the skin and methods of control

In response to requests to share the data accumulated over the past 45 years and especially the past twenty years examining the safety of cosmetic raw materials I am pleased to publish this book in order to help colleagues. At over a thousand pages it is impossible to supply all the references and it is hoped that this will not detract from the value of the work. The NOAEL (No Observable Adverse Effect Level) value is very rare and where such a figure does not exist I have used data and feedback from over 30,000 formulae of commercially launched products and any adverse feedback to create a virtual NOAEL figure that can be used to calculate out the margin of safety. The animal data, instrumental data, RIPT (Repeat Insult Patch Test) figures, and animal alternative test data have all been taken into consideration when producing this value.

CRC Handbook of Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Excipients provides a comprehensive summary of toxicological issues regarding inactive ingredients in pharmaceutical products, cosmetic products, and food additives. Background information on regulations and labeling requirements for each type of product is provided, and 77 articles critically review human and animal data pertinent to a variety of agents and makes judgments regarding the clinical relevance. The book also identifies at-risk populations, such as neonates, patients with renal failure, and atopic patients. Inactive common pharmaceutical agents and/or foods containing certain ingredients are listed to help physicians counsel hypersensitive patients who must avoid products containing these excipients.

Cosmetics are a fast-growing segment in the global personal care industry and the application of nanocosmeceuticals are on the rise. Conventional cosmetics greatly lack specific delivery systems, prolong effects and relatively heavy doses may be necessary. One of the common complaints of consumers is rather short-term activity of cosmetics, especially in face care products.Nanocosmeceuticals, having more advanced nutrient delivery mechanisms, carry more task specific nutrients to the skin deep where it can be metabolized and used to nourish cells. It can help to increase the aesthetic appeal of a product influencing the purchase decision of a consumer. Nanocosmeceuticals: Innovation, Application and Safety highlights the trends and applications of nanotechnology in cosmeceuticals for more advance and task specific nutrients delivery and long term effects of personal care products using liposome, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid carriers, transferosomes, niosomes, phytosomes, nanoemulsions, silver nanoparticles, chitin nanofibrils etc. It also provides the detailed information on regulatory laws, safety and marketing aspects of cosmeceuticals. This book offers an indispensable guide for professors, researchers, students, formulation chemists as well as formulation scientists in academia and industry; beauticians and decision-makers in consumer organizations. - First book on 'Nanocosmeceuticals' - Serves as a valuable resource of scientific innovations, novel applications, safety and regulations of Nanocosmeceuticals - Offers an updated and highly structured reference material for students, researchers, professors, formulation chemists and scientists

Chiral Organic Pollutants introduces readers to the growing challenges of chirality in synthetic chemicals. In this volume, contributors brilliantly summarize the characteristics of chiral pollutants to provide tools and techniques for effectively assessing their environmental and human health risks. Chapters cover recent research on the physicochemical properties, sources, exposure pathways, environmental fate, toxicity, and enantioselective analysis of chiral organic pollutants. Chiral Organic Pollutants also provides comprehensive discussions on the current trends in the synthesis and legislation of chiral chemicals. Key Features: Includes sampling and analytical methods for the enantioselective analysis of a wide array of chiral organic pollutants in food and the environment Summarizes recent research on the sources, fate, transport, and toxicity of chiral organic pollutants in the environment Critically examines the sources and pathways of chiral organic pollutants such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and flame retardants in food Includes a comprehensive discussion on current trends in the enantioselective synthesis and chiral switching of pesticides and pharmaceuticals Provides analysis of current national and international regulations of chiral synthetic chemicals The use of chiral synthetic chemicals such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and halogenated flame retardants has significantly grown in the past 60 years. Hence, understanding the human and environmental health effects of chiral organic pollutants is crucial in the industry, academia, and policymaking. Chiral Organic Pollutants is an excellent textbook and reference for students, scientists, engineers, and policymakers interested in food quality, environmental pollution, chemical analysis, organic synthesis, and toxicology. First published in 1991, this volume responds to the major changes in the petrochemical industry over the previous decade due to increases in raw material costs, improvements in process efficiency and the increasing importance now being placed on environmental issues. The Handbook of Petrochemicals and Processes provides comprehensive, up to date information on 76 petrochemicals and their processes, giving details of the chemical reactions involved in transforming raw materials, such as olefins and aromatics, into chemicals, plastics and synthetic fibres. The competing processes for each product including the latest technical developments are described, with their feedstock requirements, catalysts and conversion rates compared. Many of the processes are illustrated with clear flow diagrams. The book is easy to use with the products arranged in alphabetical order. Within each chapter on the individual products there are details of the physical characteristics and properties; grades available; handling; transportation; health and safety aspects and lists of the major manufacturers and licensors The Handbook of Petrochemicals and Processes gathers together in one volume, all the commonly sought chemical information. It will prove an invaluable source of reference for industrial chemists, chemical engineers, and industry professionals, as well as librarians and information centres concerned with the petrochemical industry.
