Humanity’s ever-increasing hunger for mineral raw materials, caused by a growing global population and ever increasing standards of living, has resulted in economic geology becoming a subject of urgent importance. This book provides a broad panorama of mineral deposits, covering their origin and geological characteristics, the principles of the search for ores and minerals, and the investigation of newly found deposits. Practical and environmental issues that arise during the life cycle of a mine and after its closure are addressed, with an emphasis on sustainable and "green" mining. The central scientific theme of the book is to place the extraordinary variability of mineral deposits in the frame of fundamental geological processes. The book is written for earth science students and practicing geologists worldwide. Professionals in administration, resource development, mining, mine reclamation, metallurgy, and mineral economics will also find the text valuable. Economic Geology is a fully revised translation of the the fifth edition of the German language text Mineralische und Energie-Rohstoffe. Excerpt from General Economic Geology a Textbook Scope of Economic Geology. - Economic geology is the application of geology to economic problems. It is sometimes termed mining geology or applied geology. It treats of the occurrence, distribution, and origin of mineral deposits. In general the economic geologist is expected to answer the questions: Where is the deposit? Why is it where it is? To what depth is it likely to extend? What changes are likely to take place in it with increasing depth? How shall one find the continuation of a deposit that is "lost"? The practising economic geologist is expected to appraise mines and prospects or estimate their value and to recommend development work that will reveal at minimum cost any deposits that are not exposed. He is expected also to have a general knowledge of the distribution of deposits of the valuable minerals. Changes in mining, milling, and metallurgic practice are continually taking place and such changes may make it possible to treat at a satisfactory profit material that was formerly valueless. A few decades ago the introduction of the cyanide process made workable many deposits of gold-bearing rock that had previously been unworkable. Later the improvement of the cyanide process made certain silver-bearing deposits valuable. Still later the oil-flotation process made valuable ores of material that could not be treated before. These and other changes again and again have revived mining districts that were essentially abandoned. The geologist is frequently called upon for information about districts that are dormant. Changes in trade and transportation are continually changing conditions for mining. The economic geologist is expected to be informed as new needs arise. When the European war was begun there was need for many metals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This explores the economic applications of geology and its relevance to various fields such as mining, agriculture, and construction. It covers the common elements, minerals, and rocks of the earth, their origins, and their relative abundance. The book also discusses the geology and classification of mineral deposits, world production and reserves, and political and commercial control. Additionally, it covers water, rocks, and soils as mineral resources, and the economic and geologic features of the fertiliser group of minerals. This book provides an insight into the economic importance of geology.

This vivid introduction to economic geology not only describes the most important deposit types, but also the processes involved in their formation. Magmatic, hydrothermal and sedimentary processes as well as weathering and alteration are explained in the framework of plate tectonics and the history of the Earth. The chapter about fossil fuels includes unconventional deposits and the much-debated fracking. Other topics covered are exploration, mining and economic aspects like commodity prices.
