This book puts forward a radical, unorthodox thesis with respect to the Anthropocene, the philosophy of Deleuze/Guattari and education. This book analyses the Anthropocene for its unconscious drives and develops a parallel mode of education and social change.

This edited book gathers seven established art educators-educator artists who address art education from the philosophical position of Deleuze and Guattari. This book raises questions as to where the future of art and its education might be heading if the focus on art was to be repositioned along Deleuze and Guattari’s philosophy of immanence. The chapters are speculative as they query what is ‘thinking’ in the art process. There is an attempt to project other forms of what art can ‘do,’ and the curriculum that can emerge when a student-centered problematic is explored along such lines.

This unique book comprehensively covers the evolving field of transversality, globalization and education, and presents creative, research-based thought experiments that seek to unravel the forces of globalization impacting education. Pursuing various approaches to and uses of transversality, with a focus on the ideas of Félix Guattari, it is the only book of its kind. Specifically, it examines the influence of Guattari at the forefront of educational research that addresses, enhances and sets free activist micro-perspectives, which can counter macro-global movements, such as capitalism and climate change. This volume weaves together a variety of perspectives aimed at confronting a spectrum of ethico-political global challenges arising in the Anthropocene which affect the future of life on planet earth. In this book, the authors offer a multi-faceted approach to address the consequences of its imaginary and projective directions. The chapters span the disciplines of political economy, cybernetics, environmentalism, bio-science, psychoanalysis, bioacoustics, documentary film, installation art, geoperformativity, and glitch aesthetics. The first section attempts to flesh out new aspects of current debates. Questions over the Capitaloscene are explored via conflations of class and climate, revisiting the eco-Marxist analysis of capitalism, and the financial system that thrives on debt. The second section explores the imaginary narratives that raise questions regarding non-human involvement. The third section addresses ’geoartisty,’ the counter artistic responses to the speculariztion of climate disasters, questioning eco-documentaries, and what a post-anthropocentric art might look like. The last section addresses the pedagogical response to the Anthropocene.

What might the significance of Deleuze and Guattari be in relation to the new and urgent set of concerns that the Anthropocene engenders? This book brings together a collection of multi-disciplinary voices to discuss, debate, and devise a series of ahuman pedagogical proposals that aim to address the challenging ecological, political, social, economic, and aesthetic milieu within which education is situated today. Attending to contemporary calls to decenter all-too-human educational research and practice, while also coming to terms with the limits and inheritances through which such calls are made possible in the first place, this book aims to interrogate, but also invent, what we are calling an ahuman pedagogy. Organized in three main sections — Conjuring an Ahuman Pedagogy, Machinic Re/distributions, and Non-pedagogies for Unthought Futures — this multi-disciplinary experiment in ahuman pedagogies for the age of the Anthropocene offers an experimental – albeit always speculative and incomplete – series of pedagogical proposals that work to unthink and counter-actualize educational futures-as-usual.

Practising Immanence: Living with Theory and Environmental Education makes creative contributions to both qualitative inquiry and environmental education by exploring how each of these ideas seep and fuse into one another, creating a space where methodology becomes pedagogy, and where each of these is already always environmental: indivisible with life. Clarke’s energising and innovative approach offers a challenge to conventional research practices and shows ways in which inquiry can be done differently. Drawing on new materialisms, affect theory and the practical philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, the book details the PhD journey of the author, merging stories and theory (and stories of theory) in the production of eight ‘haecceities’ – a philosophical concept which prioritises the thisness of a thing or event. This move allows a novel methodological approach whereby the haecceities act as sites of variation on the events of the book: the self as unstable and posthuman; the environment as everything (immanent) rather than as an overly romantic or a green version of nature; and the tensions that these moves create for ethical orientations in education, inquiry and life in the Anthropocene. Practising Immanence brings theory to life through a diffractively critical style and a unique approach to environmental pedagogic practice.
