Excerpt from Elementary Physical Geography The educational progress of recent years has resulted in two profitable advances for the venerable subject of Geography. A strong feeling has been developed in favor of treating the subject as a whole more rationally than heretofore, and a wholesome desire has arisen in favor of introducing some of its scientific aspects more generally into the school course. A natural accompaniment of this progress has been a demand for text-books that shall present Physical Geography in its modern scientific development as well as in an elementary form. The present book, reduced from the author's Physical Geography, has been prepared to meet this demand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from First Book of Physical Geography IN preparing my Elementary Physical Geography, I attempted to present the subject in such a way as to put it forward in its more modern aspect, and particularly to include the new physiography, or science of land form. An effort was made to cover the entire ground in a very elementary way; but at once the difficulty arose that the field was so large, that even to present the subject in an elementary manner would require a good-sized book. To avoid this there were two things possible: one to omit some parts and curtail others; the other to com mence the consideration of some subjects with the assump tion that either the scholars knew the preliminary points, or that the teacher could explain them. Both of these methods of shortening the book were followed, but even then it grew to a size entirely too large for those schools in which the subject has a minor place. The result has been, that although this book has met with a success wholly unexpected, many teachers who wish to give instruction in the new physical geography, are unable to make use of it. It is partly in the hope of meeting the needs of these, that I have undertaken the prep aration of this smaller book, from which still other sub jeeta are omitted, but in which the attempt is made to start from the beginning, and make every topic thoroughly clear. Excerpt from Elementary Lessons in Physical Geography While, therefore, adhering to a systematic treat ment, I have been led to dwell, for example, on the phenomena of the atmosphere at much greater length than is usual in elementary class-books. These 'phenomena are among the most familiar and uni versal features of the globe; examples of them can be constantly adduced, and they may thus be used with singular advantage to illustrate how the facts of science are observed and its laws are deduced. Excerpt from Questions in Geikie's Elementary Physical Geography With the view of aiding Teachers in the use of the Elementary Lessons in Physical Geography, I have prepared the following series of Questions. It is obviously desir able that as frequently as possible the question should be so framed that the au swer cannot be given in the mere words of the Lesson, but requires that the meaning of the paragraph to which it refers be first clearly apprehended. Much advantage will accrue from c0pious exercises upon the Maps, of which enlarged copies for use as diagrams Will be found serviceable. Ad vantage should likewise be taken of every opportunity of illustration from familiar or easily observable phenomena. Examples are given in the Lessons to show how this may be done (see, for instance, Lesson This method, to be adopted in every subject where it is admissible, may be carried into effect in oral teaching in a way which cannot of course. Excerpt from The Teacher's Guide to Accompany the Text-Book of Elementary Physical Geography The following pages are in effect a summary and exten sion Of an active correspondence with teachers that has grown up since the publication Of the author's Physical Geography and Elementary Physical Geography. The progress made in this branch Of earth science during recent years has been so rapid that any text-book in which the modern aspects Of the science are presented must awaken many questions in the teacher's mind. It is with the desire to answer these questions that the following sug gestions and explanations have been written out. A num ber Of laboratory exercises are here outlined; but a. Excerpt from High School Physical Geography IN order to fit this work for use in Canadian schools, some changes have been made in the order of topics and in the subject-matter. For this revision the authors are largely indebted to Professor A. P. Cole man of the University of Toronto, who has given the volume the benefit of his intimate knowledge of the geography and geology of the Dominion, substituting in every chapter pertinent examples and discussions in place of material which would have special value only in the United States. New chapters have been added, dealing with rocks, with the physical history of Canada, and with matters of elementary astronomy. For the chapters dealing with astronomy Professor C. A. Chant of the University of Toronto is responsible. The study of rocks is introduced before the processes are taken up in detail, and the account of the earth's relations to the sun is transferred to a point near the end of the book. Suitable substitutions have been made in the maps and half-tone illustrations. Not withstanding, these changes, the volume distinctly keeps its identity, and is issued in its new dress in the hope that it may be useful in geographic instruc tion in the High' Schools, Collegiate Institutes and Academies of Canada. The authors are specially indebted to Professors Cole man and Chant, and to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company for many of the illustrations used in this edition.
