This book is devoted to the description of typical trends in development, formation and the present state of English Author Lexicography, the roots of which go back to concordances to the Bible and glossaries of the complete works of Chaucer (xvi c.). Part I, “Linguistic Dictionaries to English Writers,” presents lexicographic analysis of old and new concordances, indices, glossaries and lexicons of famous English writers with special reference to Chaucer, Milton, Shakespeare, and Dickens. It presents a modern scene of author glossaries for unfamiliar words, terms and other groups of writers’ vocabulary (e.g. Shakespeare’s insults and his erotic language). The reader is offered a detailed review of author concordances, glossaries and lexicons on the Internet, along with criticism of printed dictionaries. Part II, “Encyclopedic Reference Works to English Writers,” deals with English author encyclopedic reference books, i.e. encyclopedias, guides and companions; dictionaries of characters and place names; quotations and proverbs, and Internet encyclopedic resources. The book also provides a comprehensive list of references on author lexicography and an Index of Dictionaries to the English Writers (xvi–xxi cc.), including 300 titles of linguistic and encyclopedic dictionaries, which is a reliable user guide in the world of English author lexicography.

The present book is based on presentations made during the IXth International School on Lexicography, “Multi-disciplinary Lexicography: Traditions and Challenges of the XXIst Century”, at Ivanovo State University, September 8–10, 2011, and continues a series of collective monographs devoted to the theoretical and practical problems of lexicography, published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing in 2007, 2009 and 2010. The scope of topics discussed in four parts (Dictionary as a Cross-road of Language and Culture, Dictionary Use and Dictionary Criticism, Terminology and LSP Studies, and Projects of New Dictionaries) is rather wide and focuses on burning problems of European, Russian and world lexicography, as well as on projects of new dictionaries. This book will be of interest to theoreticians, practitioners, and students of linguistic faculties.

This book brings together papers presented at the Tenth International School on Lexicography, titled “Life Beyond Dictionaries” and held in Ivanovo, Russia, and Florence, Italy, in September 2013. It continues the series of edited volumes dealing with the theoretical and practical aspects of lexicography, published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing in 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2013. The book is divided into three sections, “Lexicography Worldwide: Historical and Modern Perspectives”, “Tourism and Heritage Dictionaries with Special Reference to Culture”, and “Projects of New Dictionaries”. The contributions to this volume investigate problems of world lexicography and its cultural contexts with special reference to projects of new dictionaries. As such, the book will be of interest to theoreticians, lexicographers, and students of linguistic faculties.

In this collection, famed scholar of proverbs Wolfgang Mieder explores the multifaceted use and function of proverbs through the history of the United States, from their early beginnings up through their use by such modern-day politicians as Barack Obama, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Bernie Sanders. Building on previous publications and unpublished research, Mieder explores sociopolitical aspects of the American worldview as expressed through the use of proverbs in politics, women’s rights, and the civil rights movement—and by looking at the use of proverbial phrases, Mieder demonstrates how one traditional phrase can take on numerous expressive roles over time, and how they continue to play a key role in our contemporary moment.

This is the first of three volumes offering a new history of lexicography in and beyond the early modern British Isles. This volume focuses on the period from the end of the Middle Ages to the year 1600, exploring the first printed dictionaries, Latin and foreign language dictionaries, and specialized English wordlists.
