This collection of research papers explores some of the salient issues relating to the impact of demographic change on the workings and outcomes of labour markets. A first chapter studies the direct impact of ageing on employment and unemployment. However, the age structure of the workforce also shapes productivity and the scope for innovation, issues which are taken up in turn. Furthermore, it is often argued that a decline in the size of the workforce may be offset by an increase in the workers’ skills and knowledge. The impact of demographic developments such as ageing and migration on the accumulation and transfer of human capital is, therefore, studied by a further set of contributions. The volume is rounded off with analyses relating to the supply of labour by women and by older workers. The authors ask, for instance, whether (female) labour migration as well as changes in retirement patterns and policies may counterbalance the expected workforce shrinking.

The 20th century was the century of explosive population growth, resulting in unprecedented impacts; in contrast, the 21st century is likely to see the end of world population growth and become the century of population aging. We are currently at the crossroads of these demographic regimes. This book presents fresh evidence about our demographic future and provides a new framework for understanding the underlying unity in this diversity. Migration and Decent Work: Challenges for the Global South takes a journey through nine countries in the global South—from Mexico to India to Argentina to Turkey—to explore the relationship between migration and work from a human rights perspective. Labor insertion is one of the most effective forms of integration because it allows migrants and refugees to enjoy more dignified living conditions, to contribute to the development of host communities, and to build relationships with the local population. But ensuring the right to work is a challenge for countries in the global South that have weak or developing economies and problems with job creation, which can force many people—not just migrants—to engage in precarious work and put themselves at risk of labor exploitation. Under these circumstances, advocating for migrants’ and refugees’ right to work is more urgent than ever. The recognition of decent work as a human right means that states may not pursue economic growth at the expense of the exploitation of migrants and refugees, but instead must seek to ensure opportunities and prosperity for all. In this regard, it is critical to foster discussions, such as the ones featured in this book, that facilitate the sharing of experiences and lessons learned on the labor conditions of migrants and refugees. The authors of the nine chapters in Migration and Decent Work are activists, academics, and members of civil society who have worked on the issue of migration from different angles and who address the challenge of migrants’ labor inclusion from an interdisciplinary and rights-based perspective. Their contributions offer an overview of migrants’ and refugees’ right to work in a range of countries in the global South based on an analysis of local contexts, public policies, and the everyday realities faced by these workers. In addition to offering local and global recommendations for ensuring the right to decent work for migrants and refugees, this book seeks to strengthen the human rights movement through collaboration and the sharing of experiences. This book presents the proceedings of the 2nd International Congress on Innovation and Research—A Driving Force for Socio-Econo-Technological Development (CI3 2021). CI3 was held on September 1–3, 2021. It was organized by the Instituto Tecnológico Superior Rumiñahui and GDEON, in co-organization with Higher Institutes: Bolivariano de Tecnología, Central Técnico, Espíritu Santo, José Chiriboga Grijalva, ISMAC, Policía Nacional del Ecuador Vida Nueva; and sponsored by the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (Peru), Universidade Federal de Goiás (Brazil) and City University of New York (United States). CI3 aims to disseminate the research project results that are being carried out in different Higher Education Institutions, research centers, and the business sector.

The sociology of health and illness is a rapidly growing field. Yet, as a field, it has suffered from a remarkably limited perspective dominated by scholarship produced in the global north. Scholars in the sociology of health and illness have been late to enter debates in global health and have generally failed to learn lessons from work originating in the global south. To begin to address this limitation, this edited collection features notable contributions from Latin American scholars exploring key issues, including sickle cell disease in Brazil, cancer and Chagas disease in Argentina and reproductive health in Mexico. This collection, offering a snapshot of the rich and nuanced research being conducted in the region, offers readers valuable lessons. It is our argument that Latin American health sociology has much to offer the larger field of sociology – both for what it can teach us about Latin America in and of itself, and for what this field of scholarship can teach us about health and illness as broadly defined. This collection challenges readers to think about the global nature of health inequalities.
