Euxit Emergency Exit For Europe

After the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, all the issues remain unsolved in the European Union and the populist wave is ever more pressing. There are many fake-news about the EU, which Roberto Sommella, Director of External Relations of the Italian Competition Authority, founder of La Nuova Europa, columnist for Corriere della Sera and HuffPost, honorary citizen of Ventotene, home of the namesake European Manifesto, tried to unveil in his latest book, Euxit, emergency exit for Europe. In a crucial time for the EU, Sommella tries to counter the arguments of those who wish to return to national borders and currencies, starting from the effects of Brexit on British financial markets, with the aim of dismantling three clichés about migrants, the countries that profit from ECB policies and those who would like to withdraw after EU membership. Sommella hopes that the governments will call for a large conference focusing on three tasks: the drafting of a constitution Europe, the strengthening of the European Parliament powers and the reform of the EU electoral law to allow voter to choose directly the President of the Commission.

Photographs of Mexico, a portfolio of twenty hand-pulled dust grain gravure prints by Paul Strand, has long been unavailable. A second edition was published as the Mexican Portfolio in 1967. Six hand-pulled photogravures from this portfolio are now available in a new edition of 350 prints & 35 artist's proofs bearing the seal of the Paul Strand Archive.

This book charts the evolution of EU law (both internal market and institutional law) through the jurisprudence of one of its leading jurists. Few have as close an eye-witness view of the evolution of European Union law as judges at the ECJ. They not only observe, however, but actively work towards its development. This collection assesses the momentous contribution to European Union law made by José Luís da Cruz Vilaça. Taking those areas of law which were directly shaped by his judgments (institutional law/internal market/free movement of persons and judicial review), leading scholars assess his legacy. "Paul Strand in Mexico" tells the story of the photographer's journeys through Mexico in the early 1930s. In search of a fresh start, Strand traveled to Mexico City in late 1932 at the invitation of Carlos Chavez, the eminent Mexican composer and conductor. The work he created during this key period reflects a time of intense productivity, creative renewal, and the evolution of Strand's foundational idea of the "collective portrait," in which he depicted a region through photographs of individuals, still lifes and studies of architecture and religious subjects. The first publication to chronicle this pivotal time in Strand's career (1932-34), "Paul Strand in Mexico "demonstrates how, through his photographic studies and work in film, Strand deepened his involvement with Mexican art, society, and revolutionary politics. Shedding new light on this little-known chapter of Strand's life, a scholarly analysis by James Krippner (Associate Professor of History at Haverford College, Pennsylvania) brings together primary research from distinguished archives and institutions in both Mexico and the United States, and Mexican photo-historian Alfonso Morales contributes an essay contextualizing this remarkable body of work within the canon of Mexican photography and film of the 1930s. Additionally, the appendix serves as the catalogue raisonne of Strand's entire photographic output in Mexico. The culmination of Strand's time in Mexico was his collaboration with Emilio Gomez Muriel and Academy Award-winning director Fred Zinnemann on the groundbreaking film, "Redes" ("The Wave") (1936). A remastered DVD version of the film is included with this essential volume. Paul Strand (1890-1976) is one of the great photographers of the twentieth century. As a youth, he studied under Lewis Hine at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, going on to draw acclaim from such illustrious sources as Alfred Stieglitz. After World War II, Strand traveled around the world--from New England to Ghana to France to the Outer Hebrides--to photograph, and in the process created a dynamic and significant body of work.

As the EU enters an increasingly uncertain phase after the 2016 Brexit referendum, Euroscepticism continues to become an increasingly embedded phenomenon within party systems, non-party groups and within the media. Yet, academic literature has paid little attention to the emergence of, and increased development of, transnational and pan-European networks of EU opposition. As the ‘gap’ between Europe’s mainstream political elites and an increasingly sceptical public has widened, pan-European spheres of opposition towards the EU have developed and evolved. The volume sets out to explain how such an innately contradictory phenomenon as transnational Euroscepticism has emerged. It draws on a variety of perspectives and case studies in a number of spheres – the European Parliament, political parties, the media, civil society and public opinion. Examining to what extent the pan-European dimension of Euroscepticism is becoming increasingly influential, it argues that opposition to European integration has for too long been viewed somewhat narrowly, through the paradigm of national party politics. This text will be of key interest to scholars, students and professionals in EU politics, European studies, political parties, and more broadly to comparative politics and international relations.
