This edited volume explores various issues in family tourism studies and complements the dramatic development of this market segment in China. The book concentrates on family and children tourism, and through its chapters, hopes to enrich the landscape of family tourism in academia. The family market in tourism has received increasing attention over past decades. Yet academic endeavors in this area remain somewhat lacking in depth and scope. In addition to imbalanced contributions from authors of diverse backgrounds, the extant literature suffers from insufficient inclusion of children. Relevant studies are largely limited to conventional tourism destinations such as beaches and cultural attractions. In response to growing academic interest in family tourism, this book is a compilation of eight chapters that attempt to push the scope and boundaries of existing research on family tourism. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of China Tourism Research.

This book explores the emergent relationship between food and family in contemporary China through an empirical case study of Guangzhou, a typical city, to understand the texture of everyday life in the new consumerist society. The primary focus of this book is on the family dynamics of middle-income households in Guangzhou, where everyday food practices, including growing food, shopping, storing, cooking, feeding, and eating, play a pivotal role. The book aims to conduct a comprehensive and integrated analysis of themes such as material and emotional domestic cultures, family relationships, and social connections between the domestic and the public, based on a discussion of family food practices. These topics will not only offer academic readers a full understanding of the most innovative recent critical engagements with urban Chinese families but also provide more general readers with a broader view of food consumption patterns within the scope of domestic and family issues. This book will be of interest to sociologists, anthropologists, and human geographers as well as post graduate students who are interested in food studies and Chinese studies.

Theming Asia: Culture, Nature and Heritage in a Transforming Environment presents a theoretical, thematic and empirical examination of theming, theme parks and themed spaces in contemporary Asia. Drawing on cases from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia and Singapore, it details how the proliferation of theming in places of consumption, education, entertainment and everyday life has shaped the social and spatial terrains of modern-day Asia. This is done largely through the radical transformation of ideas of culture, nature and heritage – a theoretical and empirical area that warrants urgent and dedicated scholarly inquiry. Providing an innovative study of theme parks and themed spaces in contemporary Asia, this publication highlights the critical role of theming in the making, ordering, branding, as well as contestation of cultural, natural and heritage places. The intersections of these processes are foregrounded within the context of Disneyization, the experience economy, imagineered spaces and debates over authenticity and superficiality. A diverse range of case studies, as well as a general theoretical introduction, give much room for revisiting and reimagining issues of culture and nature in a transforming Asia. This book was originally published as a special issue of Tourism Geographies.
