“Far more than a history of lunar exploration . . . [Hurt] is at his best in the deft sketches of the astronauts—as they were and as they became.”—Chicago Tribune Between December 1968 and December 1972, twenty-four men captured the imagination of the world as they voyaged to the moon. In For All Mankind, Harry Hurt III presents a dramatic, engrossing, and expansive account of those journeys. Based on extensive research and exclusive interviews with the Apollo astronauts, For All Mankind remains one of the most comprehensive and revealing firsthand accounts of space travel ever assembled. In their own words, the astronauts share the sights, sounds, thoughts, fears, hopes, and dreams they experienced during their incredible voyages. In a compelling narrative structured as one trip to the moon, Harry Hurt recounts all the drama and danger of the lunar voyages, from the anxiety of the astronauts’ prelaunch procedures through the euphoria of touchdown on the lunar surface. Updated with a new introduction by the author for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, For All Mankind is both an extraordinary adventure story and an important historical document. “Hurt’s timely book is like an instant replay of the dramatic moon flight years . . . Hurt tells us of the hardships and the successes of the Apollo program, the remarkable journey to the moon, of the astronauts and technicians who made it possible and the goals of the nation in space.”—Houston Chronicle “The meat here lies in the lunar voyage itself, an irresistible mix of danger, courage, tedium, and spectacle, evoked with unprecedented detail by those who went there.”—Kirkus Reviews

The very nature of international air transportation and outer space activities means that they have an international perspective. This is more evident today than at any time in the past, due to the intensification of trans-boundary trade, the internationalization of the division of work and the acceleration of technological progress. The Asian Institute of Air and Space Law, the Graduate School of Law, Soochow University, Taipei, the International Institute of Air and Space Law, Leiden University, and the Institute of Air and Space Law, McGill University, have instituted international conferences in order to provide a world platform for eminent specialists and scholars. The Tokyo Conference, upon which this excellent collection of papers is based, was concerned with a wide range of legal and practical questions arising from regulatory developments in international air transportation and in the exploration, exploitation and use of outer space and celestial bodies. The main topics of deliberation were: megacarriers in the 21st century, the need to revise the Bermuda Capacity Formula and the Chicago Convention, liability and responsibility in international aviation, safety, security and environment, airline industry competition, legal and political aspects of space transportation and manned space flights, the protection of the space environment and dispute settlement in air and space law. They are discussed in this volume with unparalleled authority.

On July 20, 1969, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin left humanity's first footprints on the Moon. Along with bootprints, they left a plaque: "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon, July 1969, A. D. We came in peace for all mankind." While this endeavor was driven by a Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, its impact was felt around the world. For All Humankind collects the memories of eight non-Americans touched by this historic event to convey how this mission was, indeed, for all humankind.

The search for love is a pursuit every one of us can identify with. When love is found, the heart is overjoyed and liberated. But what happens to the spirit when love is lost? With the heart of a poet and the pen of a songwriter, Larry Norman McCollum presents his first tome of poetry. Comprised of a lifetime's worth of poetry and songs, Love for All Mankind is indeed a labor of love for McCollum, who intends to finish out his twilight years sharing his gift of writing with the world. McCollum writes of the glorious nature of love found: "I fall to my knees every night and ask God why he has brought someone to me that I love with all my heart and soul. / What did I do to deserve such an angel from heaven?" and wistfully looks back at love lost: "Your touch was soft and gentle. / Your smile was a memory in my mind. / I guess I'll never find a love as true as the one I had with you. / And I'll always wonder why, how your heart turned blue." A book of love-pursued, found, and lost-Love for All Mankind is full of poetry that touches the heart.

In the years between the historic first moon landing by Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969, and his death at age 82 on August 25, 2012, Neil Armstrong received hundreds of thousands of cards and letters from all over the world, congratulating him, praising him, requesting pictures and autographs, and asking him what must have seemed to him to be limitless—and occasionally intrusive—questions. Of course, all the famous astronauts received fan mail, but the sheer volume Armstrong had to deal with for more than four decades after his moon landing was staggering. Today, the preponderance of those letters—some 75,000 of them—are preserved in the archives at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Dear Neil Armstrong: Letters to the First Man on the Moon publishes a careful sampling of these letters—roughly 400—reflecting the various kinds of correspondence that Armstrong received along with representative samples of his replies. Selected and edited by James R. Hansen, Armstrong’s authorized biographer and author of the New York Times best seller First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong, this collection sheds light on Armstrong’s enduring impact and offers an intimate glimpse into the cultural meanings of human spaceflight. Readers will explore what the thousands of letters to Neil Armstrong meant not only to those who wrote them, but as a snapshot of one of humankind’s greatest achievements in the twentieth century. They will see how societies and cultures projected their own meanings onto one of the world’s great heroes and iconic figures.
