This report (the title of which is abbreviated to TBFRA-2000) is the contribution by UN-Economic Commission for Europe (UN-ECE) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to the FAO Global Forest Resource Assessment 2000. The objective of TBFRA-2000 is to collect and make available the best possible information on the forest resources of the 55 countries it covers. It is intended to be of use to governments and the international forest policy community and also to scientists, forest industries, NGOs and anyone interested in biodiversity and climate change. The report contains statistical and descriptive information and analyses of the following aspects of forests and wooded land: area - status and changes; ownership and management status; wood supply and carbon sequestration; biological diversity and environmental protection; forest condition and damage; socio-economic functions. The data were supplied by national correspondents who adjusted the raw national data to internationally agreed definitions. The reliability and comparability of the data is discussed in a separate chapter. The report also provides indicators of sustainable forest management.

Wood and wood products are essential to large areas of the world economy and yet there has until now been no single definitive reference source to which those new to or requiring a strategic overview of the industry could turn for a comprehensive picture of the market chain from forest to consumer. The international timber trade provides a detailed overview of the entire timber and timber products business. Forests represent a remnant wilderness of high recreational value in the densely populated industrial societies, a threatened natural resource in some regions of the world and a renewable reservoir of essential raw materials for the wood processing industry. In June 1992 the United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro initiated a world-wide process of negotiation with the aim of ensuring sustainable management, conservation and development of forest resources. Although there seems to be unanimous support for sustainable development from all quarters, there is no generally accepted set of indicators which allows comparisons to be made between a given situation and a desirable one. In a recent summary paper prepared by the FAO Forestry and Planning Division, Ljungman et al. (1999) find that forest resources continue to diminish, while being called upon to produce a greater range of goods and services and that calls for sustainable forest management will simply go unheeded if the legal, policy and administrative environment do not effectively control undesirable practices. Does the concept of sustainable forest management represent not much more than a magic formula for achieving consensus, a vague idea which makes it difficult to match action to rhetoric? The concept of sustainable forest management is likely to remain an imprecise one, but we can contribute to avoiding management practices that are clearly unsustainable.

Presenting a summary of the development in boreal forest management, this book provides a progressive vision for some of the world's northern forests. It includes a selection of chapters based on the research conducted by the Sustainable Forest Management Network across Canada. It includes a number of case histories.

Considerable emphasis has been placed on the interactions between environmental change and forests in recent years.
