Becoming a new father can be an overwhelming experience. Suddenly, there is this new life looking to you for protection, provision, and guidance. It can be difficult to know where to begin. Often new fathers look to their own fathers or other elders for counsel and direction as they take on their new lifelong role. In Forty Letters to a New Dad, Steven Molin reflects in his letters on the wonder of fatherhood as he shares stories and insights from his own parental experience with his son who has recently become a father. As he explores the fathering experience in such letters as "Reflecting On A Miracle," "The Fear Of Parenting," and "Now You Know About Unconditional Love," there is the realization that, as Christians, we have a heavenly Father to which we can look for our example. God loves us more than any father could ever love his child, giving us a model for how fathers should love their own children. Forty Letters to a New Dad is a perfect gift for men taking their first steps on their journey of fatherhood, assuring them that they are not alone as God walks with them on this wonderfully petrifying and terrifyingly glorious experience of being a new dad. Steven Molin is the senior pastor of Our Savior's Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Stillwater, Minnesota. He has also served parishes in Oregon and South Dakota, and been an area director for the youth ministry organization Young Life. Molin is the author of Journey Of Stones (CSS) and A Faith For All Seasons (CSS). He is a graduate of Concordia University (St. Paul, Minnesota) and Luther Theological Seminary. He is the father of two children and a proud grandfather of Gordie Molin, born in 2005.

For years now, it has been the author’s habit to write a monthly letter to his children during their teenage years. The letters cover an amazing array of life lessons that also show an intimate glimpse of one family’s life journey. All families, the same challenges and it is this connection that makes the book endearing and relevant to all who read it. Christian faith and values are highlighted throughout, and stories from the bible are brought to life. “I’ve read hundreds of books on fathering and Letters From a Father is at the very top of the list. This book shares timeless words of wisdom, grounded in scripture from the heart of a devoted father.” David Hirsch, founder 21st Century Dads Foundation & Host of the Special Fathers Network Dad to Dad Podcast. “Please read this book and perhaps start writing to the kids in your life. Letters from a Father is priceless.” Bob Muzikowski, Founder and President, Chicago Hope Academy

When Tessa Lloyd’s sons-in-law became fathers, she searched for resources that would help inspire them—especially parenting stories from other fathers. However, that book didn’t seem to exist. As a counsellor for children and families, Lloyd understood the ways a father-child relationship can have a lasting effect through the generations. Seeing a need, Lloyd decided to gather these stories herself. This resulting volume collects the stories and portraits of forty Canadian fathers who open up about both their own fathers and their deeply personal parenting experiences. This diverse group includes Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, writer Lawrence Hill, academic Niigaan Sinclair, athlete Trevor Linden, restaurateur Vikram Vij, anthropologist Wade Davis, musician Alan Doyle, artist Robert Bateman and philanthropist Rick Hansen. The contributors reflect on their varied parenting experiences and challenges, including parenting while incarcerated, parenting across cultural barriers, parenting through divorce, parenting while transgender, parenting as a celebrity and parenting with a disability. Many common themes emerge throughout the stories, including the process of overcoming cultural messages that encourage men to be strong, authoritarian and emotionally unavailable. The stories are extraordinarily candid and vulnerable, as the fathers describe their own failings, regrets and childhood traumas, as well as the humbling process of trying to do better. In one anecdote, Dr. Greg Wells describes the experience of meeting another father walking the empty streets at three a.m. with an infant, and how that moment of shared recognition gave him strength at a difficult time. The stories in this book offer a similar glimpse into the shared experiences and trials of fatherhood, but also offer fascinating reflections on the more universal experiences of finding one’s place within a family and striving to be a better person for the sake of others.
