Foundational African Writers

The essays in this collection were written in celebration of the centenaries, in 2019, of Peter Abrahams, Noni Jabavu, Sibusiso Cyril Lincoln Nyembezi and Es'kia Mphahlele, all of whom were born in 1919. All four centenarians lived rich and diverse lives across several continents. In the years following the Second World War they produced more than half a century of foundational creative writing and literary criticism, and made stellar contributions to the founding and enhancement of institutions and repertoires of African and black arts and letters in South Africa and internationally. As a result, their lifeworlds and oeuvres present sharp and multifaceted engagements with and generative insights into a wide range of issues, including precolonial existence, colonialism, empire, race, culture, identity, class, the language question, tradition, modernity, exile, Pan-Africanism, and decolonisation.

Engaging questions of language, identity, and reception to restore South African and diaspora writing to the African literary tradition

The essays, articles and interviews in this book offer a selection of views on African writing by African writers, such as Chinua Achebe, J.P. Clark, Gabriel Okara, Lewis Nkosi, James Ngugi, Okello Oculi, Ali A. Mazrui, Sembène Ousmane, Nadine Gordimer and Joe Kariuki. They form landmarks on the road towards the establishment of a cxritical assessment of modern African writing. The essays reveal three concers. Firstly a concern with the social and political function of literature. Then there is the debate on relationship between African literature and the traditions of English and French literature. Finally the writers are anxious to establish the uniquely African quality of African literature and the African society that literature reflects.

17 June 2008 is the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart by Heinemann. Black Paris documents the struggles and successes of three generations of African writers as they strive to establish their artistic, literary, and cultural identities in France. Based on long-term ethnographic, archival, and historical research, the work is enriched by interviews with many writers of the new generation. Bennetta Jules-Rosette explores African writing and identity in France from the early n gritude movement and the founding of the Pr sence Africaine publishing house in 1947 to the mid-1990s. Examining the relationship between African writing and French anthropology as well as the emergence of new styles and discourses, Jules-Rosette covers French Pan-Africanism and the revolutionary writing of the 1960s and 1970s. She also discusses the new generation of African writers who appeared in Paris during the 1980s and 1990s.
