After a long day spent in one of his restaurants or taping a television show, what Bobby Flay craves more than anything else is … a crusty-on-the-outside, juicy-on-the-inside burger; a fistful of golden, crisp, salty fries; and a thick, icy milkshake. Given the grilling guru’s affinity for bold flavors and signature twists on American favorites, it’s no surprise that he has crafted the tastiest recipes ever for this ultimate food trio. Though he doesn’t believe in messing with delicious certified Angus chuck (just salt and pepper on the patty–no “meatloaf” burgers here), Bobby loves adding flavorful relishes and condiments to elevate the classic burger. Once you’ve learned what goes into making that burger (from how to shape it so it cooks up perfectly to melting the cheese just so), go to town with Bobby's favorite combinations of additions. Try the Cheyenne Burger, which gets slathered with homemade barbecue sauce and then piled high with bacon and shoestring onion rings, or the Santa Fe Burger, topped with a blistered poblano, queso sauce, and crumbled blue corn tortilla chips. And although Bobby’s personal preference is for beef, turkey can be substituted in any burger, and a handful of salmon and tuna burger recipes are included for those looking for leaner options. After you’ve mastered the burger, discover Bobby’s secrets to cooking up the best French fries–whether they’re fried, grilled, or oven roasted, or made from spuds, sweet potatoes, or even plantains–as well as homemade potato chips and onions rings. Wash it all down with a creamy shake, from Fresh Mint—Chocolate Speckled Milkshake to Blackberry Cheesecake Milkshake (or a spiked adult variation). With the opening of Bobby’s Burger Palace in Lake Grove, New York, on Long Island–and with more locations to come–Bobby has achieved burger, fry, and shake bliss in the world. For outdoor summer bashes and casual weeknight meals that even the kids will get excited about, Bobby Flay’s Burgers, Fries & Shakes will share that bliss and remind you just why the burger is such a beloved American original. Imagine a plate of crisp, golden, salted fries, and you'll know why this is the world's favorite food. Who better to write the consummate cultural history and user's guide of the fry than Blake Lingle, whose fries were recently voted the best in America by U.S. News & World Report? In this lighthearted ode, Lingle offers a 360-degree look at fries, from their roots in antiquity, to the long-standing debate as to whether the Belgians or the French created the first true frites, to their current status as a gourmet treat (whether dusted with truffle salt or slathered in gravy and cheese curds in that outrageous Canadian delicacy, poutine). The pop culture and lore of fries includes a look inside a potato farm and fry factory. Lingle catalogs the many varieties—of shapes, oils, vegetables, coatings, seasonings, sauces, and pairings—describing what to eat and drink with your fries. Detailed instructions are given for how to cut, fry, and serve your own Platonic ideal of the fry. Additional fry know-how is combined with archival images and new color photography to showcase the glorious tastiness of fries, in this ideal gift for anyone who can't get enough of the world's favorite food.

In 1798, the federal government levied its first direct tax on American citizens, one that seemed to favor land speculators over farmers. In eastern Pennsylvania, the tax assessors were largely Quakers and Moravians who had abstained from Revolutionary participation and were recruited by the administration of John Adams to levy taxes against their patriot German Reformed and Lutheran neighbors. Led by local Revolutionary hero John Fries, the farmers drew on the rituals of crowd action and stopped the assessment. Following the Shays and Whiskey rebellions, Fries's Rebellion was the last in a trilogy of popular uprisings against federal authority in the early republic. But in contrast to the previous armed insurrections, the Fries rebels used nonviolent methods while simultaneously exercising their rights to petition Congress for the repeal of the tax law as well as the Alien and Sedition Acts. In doing so, they sought to manifest the principle of popular sovereignty and to expand the role of local people within the emerging national political system rather than attacking it from without. After some resisters were liberated from the custody of a federal marshal, the Adams administration used military force to suppress the insurrection. The resisters were charged with sedition and treason. Fries himself was sentenced to death but was pardoned at the eleventh hour by President Adams. The pardon fractured the presidential cabinet and splintered the party, just before Thomas Jefferson's and the Republican Party's "Revolution of 1800." The first book-length treatment of this significant eighteenth-century uprising, Fries's Rebellion shows us that the participants of the rebellion reengaged Revolutionary ideals in an enduring struggle to further democratize their country.

Weapons of mass destruction, Nazi occupation, deprivation, assassination, God, immigration, assimilation, the American Dream, infidelity, success, failure and redemption are just some of the ingredients sprinkled into FLEMISH FRIES - a novel of one family's journey from Antwerp, Belgium to America. Intrigued by the promise of year-around sunshine, the Vos family immigrates to California after surviving the dark days of World War II. Assimilation is the new challenge, and Willem, the youngest son, is told by his father to learn English in three months or else. Hugo, the eldest at sixteen, is ordered to find a job immediately. Heartbreaking, heartwarming, and equally comical, FLEMISH FRIES turns a sharp eye towards Americanization, which brings diametrically different results to each family member. Late in life, Willem returns to Antwerp for a three week visit to the city of his birth. He is sixty and it has been forty years since his last visit, and now he must face a crucial life altering decision.
