Geographers

Science for Geography and Environment introduces students (and academics who need to brush up their knowledge!) to scientific principles in a lively and accessible way, allowing them to proceed through the text at their own pace. The book is structured thematically with a logical development of key topics, all linked by a comprehensive cross-referencing system. Concepts and principles will be grounded in everyday experience and exemplified by reference to geographical/environmental processes. The authors are also testing each stage of the text on their own students, thereby ensuring that student needs are given top priority in the book's development. This twenty-sixth volume of Geographers: Biobibliographical Studies brings together essays on leading figures in time geography and regional theory, on GIS, on regional, cultural and political geography, on scriptural geography, historical geography and methodology, and on African exploration. Each essay engages with the individual's contribution to geography, their works and their lives and the intellectual and social contexts in which they worked and which helped shape them. In addition - and to mark the new co-editorial pairing leading the series - the volume has an essay on the history of GBS, on the importance of biographical work in the history of geography and on issues to be addressed by the scholarly communities engaged in promoting this vital area of geographical research.

The 40th volume of Geographers: Biobibliographical Studies focuses exclusively on geographers from the Global South. For the first time in the serial's history, the entire volume is devoted to geographers who were born or who lived in South America and is combined with an editorial which roots their lives and careers in the context of the Global South more generally. These geographers' biobibliographies, which consider their personal and professional trajectories and encounters, deepen our understanding of geography as a whole, and raise important wider questions of the scope and place of Southern scholarship. This volume includes meticulously detailed volumes on five of the most prominent and ground-breaking geographers in the Global South, including: · The Argentinian geographer Elina González Acha de Correa Morales, who was the first woman to apply for membership of the Argentinean Geographical Institute in 1888 and who played an important role in developing geographical science in Argentina · The Brazilian geographer Bernardino de Souza, active in Brazil in the late nineteenth century as a secretary of the Geographical and Historical Institute of Bahia · The Portuguese scholar Jaime Zuzarte Cortesão, Director of the National Library of Portugal, who was exiled in Brazil between 1940 and 1957 and greatly influenced research into the exploration and mapping of South America. · The Brazilian geographer Josué Apolônio de Castro who was a member of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation's international advisory group on nutrition during the 1940s and the 1950s · The late twentieth-century Brazilian geographer Antônio Carlos Robert Moraes, who was a key figure in the circulation of critical approaches in Brazilian geography Together these biobibliographies allow the reader to focus on the Global South as a place of geographical knowledge production, translation and reception, enlarging our discipline's histories. The volume also links the serial firmly to wider debates on decolonisation and post colonialism and is the latest manifestation of the editorial drive to broaden the serial's reach and impact and to consolidate its place as an important vehicle in narrating geography's international story.

Geographers: Biobibliographical Studies, Volume 35 includes seven essays discussing the contribution made to geography by eleven geographers. The subjects include: three British figures, Francis Rennell Rodd (1895-1978) expert on the Sahara; David Harris (1930-2013), a geographer with archaeological interests; and William Gordon East, historical geographer (1902-1998); a Spanish urban scholar, Enric Martin (1928-2012); Mauricio de Almeida Abreu (1948-2011), a Brazilian urban and historical geographer; and two essays on French geographers, one on Jacques Levainville (1869-1932), the other an innovative prosopographical essay on five French authors involved in the monumental Vidalian Geographie Universelle of the early 20th century. In these studies, geography's international dimensions are illuminated and the subject's vibrant history shown to be the result of committed endeavours in the field, in the classroom and in print.
