In early America, most children had only a few toys and parents received advice from family and friends on the best ways to make and use toys. By the early 1900s the Industrial Revolution was producing a new world of toys and giving more parents the wealth to buy them. Mass media also sang the praises of these new factory-made, store-bought toys, but that began to change as early as the mid–1900s when the mass media was used to inform parents of the many dangers of children’s toys. Many encourage violence, sexism, racism, and some are actually unsafe and unhealthy. The development of children’s toys from early America to the present time and the shifting opinions of them expressed by parents and the mass media throughout this time are the main subjects of this book. The first section discusses the many problems with toys, while the second puts these problems in historical perspective. How have these problems changed, and are still changing today? Might today’s toys be about to enter a time when they will be better than ever? The third section argues that many media toy watchers are biased toward the negative, giving toys more of a black eye than they deserve, and considers the challenges that face today’s parents as they try to choose the best toys for their children.

The #1 New York Times–bestselling author’s visually stunning story about a magical band of living toys who learn to overcome their fears. Toymaker Isaac Bodkins created the Oddkins, a group of living toys, for very special children who face difficulties in life and need true friends. There’s Amos, the brave stuffed bear; Skippy, the rabbit who dreams of being a superstar; Butterscotch, the gentle, floppy-eared pup; Burl the elephant; the wise and scholarly Gibbons; and Patch the cat. The Oddkins are given to children to inspire, support, and love them, especially during times of adversity. Only now, the toys themselves are the ones who need help. Before he dies, Mr. Bodkins delivers a dire warning to Amos the bear: Watch out for an evil toymaker and his dangerous creations! Locked up in the dark sub-basement, another group of toys is climbing out of boxes and crates and coming to life as well. These bad toys—like Rex and Lizzie, the puppets with no strings; Gear, the vicious robot; and Stinger, the horrid buzzing bumblebee with his knife-sharp stinger—were made to hurt children, not help them. Leering, laughing, and deadly, they are let loose into the world by a terrifying force. Frightening as it may be, the Oddkins must go on a journey to find Colleen Shannon, Mr. Bodkins’s chosen successor as a life-giving toymaker and the only person who can save them. The stormy night is perilous and the Oddkins face a danger that threatens not only their magic . . . but the magic in us all.

Owen Deathstalker doesn’t trust anyone, even his companions...especially his companions. But for the diplomatic mission to Mistworld, he’ll have to try. Representing the Golgotha underground, Owen hopes to bring the planet into the rebellion--their powerful psychic “espers” would be an invaluable asset. But that’s not Owen’s only reason for visiting Mistworld. In fact, everyone aboard the Sunstrider II has a secret agenda. While Owen looks for an information-gathering network that his father set up, all-too-perfect Jack Random seeks out former allies, volatile esper Jenny Psycho searches for information about her power, and ex-pirate Hazel d’Ark pursues an old vice. Of course, success won’t be easy and there’s little time to spare. The Empire’s recent esper attack already left Mistworld physically and politically exposed. Playing host to the leaders of the rebellion only makes the planet a juicier target and this time, the Empress will deploy her most ruthless weapon to crush Owen Deathstalker and the uprising, once and for all. Deathstalker: War is the third book in New York Times bestselling author Simon R. Green’s beloved space opera series.
