The preposition is of particular interest to syntacticians, historians and sociolinguists of English, as its placement within a sentence is influenced by syntactic and sociolinguistic constraints, and by how the 'rules' regarding prepositions have changed over time, as a result of language change, of change in attitudes towards language, and of processes such as standardization. This book investigates preposition placement in the early and late Modern English periods (1500-1900), with a special focus on preposition stranding (The house which I live in) in opposition to pied piping (The house in which I live). Based on a large-scale analysis of precept and usage data, this study reassesses the alleged influence of late eighteenth-century normative works on language usage. It also sheds new light on the origins of the stigmatisation of preposition stranding. This study will be of interest to scholars working on syntax and grammar, corpus linguistics, historical linguistics and sociolinguistics.

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Use of the English Language: Grammar and Rhetoric Combined The questions given are designed to lead the student to see the truth for himself. Having seen it, he should be required to express it accurately. Every recitation should be an exercise in accurate oral expression. In some cases answers have been given to questions. This would not have been done, could the author have felt sure that the book would be used only by well trained teachers. Such teachers will not confine themselves to the text-book. They will use it in such a manner as to combine the advantages of Oral and of text-book instruction. The author begs leave to remind the teachers who may use his work, that the vocabulary of the young student is very limited; hence their instructions may not be understood. Great care should be taken to have the student understand the mean ing of every word in the lesson, and of every word uttered by the teacher. In this second edition of The Uses of Grammar, Judith Rodby and W. Ross Winterowd develop their successful first edition with new examples, more discussion questions and exercises, and clear explanations of the grammatical principles that teach students to understand grammar conceptually and deeply. The first edition has been completely redesigned visually to enhance learning and retention. Rodby and Winterowd’s The Uses of Grammar 2e is an accessible approach grounded in deep understanding of language acquisition, structure, and even the rhetoric of everyday use. The Uses of Grammar 2e integrates traditional, structural, and functional concepts with ideas from contemporary linguistics and grammatical study. Rather than simply partition the study of grammar from the bottom up—from the parts to the whole—Rodby and Winterowd employ a unique structure based on the differentiation of form and function.
