Combining ethnography, visual materials, political philosophy, cultural geography, and critical analysis, Ground Sea proceeds through an innovative methodological approach. Inspired by the meandering writings of W.G. Sebald, Javier Marías, and Roland Barthes, Van Gelder develops a style both interdisciplinary and personal. Resolutely opting for an aquatic perspective, Ground Sea offers a powerful meditation on the indifference of an increasingly divided European Union with regard to considerable numbers of persons on the move, who find themselves stranded close to Calais. "A centerpiece of the Department of Defense's (DoD's) transformation efforts in recent years has been the move toward making ground forces less reliant on access to foreign-controlled facilities such as harbors, airports, or logistics bases on the ground in their area of operations." "The United States Marine Corps and Army have long maintained expeditionary forces organized and equipped to be rapidly moved and inserted into combat with little reliance on access to local bases or infrastructure. The Sea My Hunting Ground, first published in 1958, is Anthony Watkins’ account of his adventures as a commercial hunter of the basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus), the world’s second largest fish (after the whale shark). The book opens in the late 1930s with the author, no longer able to endure a dull clerkship in London, beginning a small fishing business on the west coast of Scotland. His prey, the basking shark, could be 30 feet long and weigh as much as 6 tons. Watkins recounts an early misadventure when, after harpooning a shark from his dinghy, the giant fish carried him 100 miles out to sea. But learning from his mistakes, Watkins gradually develops a successful fishing business catching and processing these now protected animals (protected in the UK and a number of other countries). Included are 15 pages of illustrations and 4 maps.

This book deals with the Tsunami intrusion in the lower plain in the Tohoku region and role played by the coastal and fluvial landforms in the damages. The land-use patterns and the recent urbanization has also been partly responsible for a risk level enhancement. The 2011 East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami has violently hit the coastal plain in the Tohoku and Kanto regions. The coastal geomorphology of these regions have played an important role in the impacts of this natural disaster. The authors introduce tectonic settings, explain and assess these different risks, and discuss future disaster prevention and mitigation planning.

This multidisciplinary book presents a critical assessment of our knowledge of chemical threats to environmental security, with special reference to prevention of chemical releases, rapid detection, risk assessment and effective management of emergency situations and long-term consequences of chemical releases. The technologies evaluated concern mainly prevention and management of both intentional and accident releases of chemicals into the environment.
