The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation defines hazardous materials (hazmat) as a substance or material capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety, or property when transported in commerce. Hazmat accidents can result in significant impact to the population (death, injuries) and damage to the environment (destroyed or damaged buildings and infrastructure). Further, hazmat, especially explosive materials, can potentially be used by terrorists to attack civilians or to destroy critical infrastructure. This handbook provides models from Operations Research and Management Science that study various activities involving hazmat transportation: risk assessment, route planning, location decisions, evacuation planning, and emergency planning for terrorist attacks. There are two important research areas in hazmat transportation that are widely studied in the literature: risk assessment and shipment planning. In the risk assessment area, important issues include measurement of accident probabilities and consequences in hazmat transport. Example works in the risk assessment area include modeling risk probability distribution over given areas, considering hazmat types and transport modes, and environmental conditions. The first half of this handbook covers the two fields of risk assessment and shipment planning, while the second half of this handbook provides useful models and insights on other important issues including location problems for undesirable facilities, network interdiction, terrorist attack, and evacuation.

This book provides in depth coverage of the Department of Transportation's Hazardous Materials Regulations. In plain, concise language, it covers the background of the new rules, their relation to existing rules, provisions for making the transition to the new regulatory system, and procedures for determining how to describe, package, mark, label, and handle materials in connection with shipping.

This book deals with an often-neglected feature of location problems, namely uncertainty, by combining two related fields: location theory and optimization. Written by leading researchers and practitioners in these fields, each chapter examines one aspect of the location process in different contexts, such as supply chains; location decisions under congestion; disaster management; design of resilient facilities; uncertainty in the health sector; and facility location in the retail sector under uncertainty. The book also addresses methodological aspects, such as chance-constrained approaches, heuristic algorithms, scenario approaches, and simulation. As such, it provides decision-makers with essential methods, tools and approaches to help them deal with these uncertainties. It is mainly intended for graduate students in the fields of operations research and logistics, as well as professionals in logistics and supply chain management.

The second edition of Multi-Objective Management in Freight Logistics builds upon the first, providing a detailed study of freight transportation systems, with a specific focus on multi-objective modelling. It offers decision-makers methods and tools for implementing multi-objective optimisation models in logistics. The second edition also includes brand-new chapters on green supply chain and hybrid fleet management problems. After presenting the general framework and multi-objective optimization, the book analyses green logistic focusing on two main aspects: green corridors and network design; next, it studies logistic issues in a maritime terminal and route planning in the context of hazardous material transportation. Finally, heterogeneous fleets distribution and coordination models are discussed. The book presents problems providing the mathematics, algorithms, implementations, and the related experiments for each problem. It offers a valuable resource for postgraduate students and researchers in transportation, logistics and operations, as well as practitioners working in service systems.

Containing the papers from the 11th International Conference on Computer Simulation in Risk Analysis and Hazard Mitigation 2018, this book will be of interest to those concerned with all aspects of risk management and hazard mitigation, associated with both natural and anthropogenic hazards. Current events help to emphasise the importance of the analysis and management of risk to planners and researchers around the world. Natural hazards such as floods, earthquakes, landslides, fires and others have always affected human societies. The more recent emergence of the importance of man-made hazards is a consequence of the rapid technological advances made in the last few centuries. The interaction of natural and anthropogenic risks adds to the complexity of the problems. The included papers, presented at the Risk Analysis Conference, cover a variety of topics related to risk analysis and hazard mitigation.

This book provides relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in Operations Research (OR) and Management Science (MS) as applied to sustainability. Its goal is to identify and describe ways in which OR and MS have been applied to and influenced the development of sustainability. Many of the issues we face today stem from the interconnectivity of the economy, society, and the environment, and from how both the economy and society are affecting the environment. In response, there have been a range of local and global efforts to advance society without harming the natural environment. The book showcases how OR/MS can help to address these issues, specifically with regard to renewable energy, smart industry, smart cities, transportation, smart homes and devices, etc. This book is intended for professionals in the fields of energy, engineering, information science, mathematics and economics, and for researchers who wish to develop new skills in connection with sustainability, or whose work involves sustainability.
