World War II, known as the Great Patriotic War to Russians, ravaged the Soviet Union and traumatized those who survived. After the war, memory of this anguish was often publicly repressed under Stalin. But that all changed by the 1960s. Under Brezhnev, the idea of the Great Patriotic War was transformed into one of victory and celebration. In Russia's Hero Cities, Ivo Mijnssen reveals how contradictory national recollections were revised into an idealized past that both served official needs and offered a narrative of heroism. This triumphant narrative was most evident in the creation of 13 Hero Cities, now located across Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. These cities, which were host to some of the fiercest and most famous battles, were named champions. Brezhnev's government officially recognized these cities with awards, financial contributions, and ritualized festivities. Their citizens also encountered the altered history at every corner—on manicured battlefields, in war memorials, and through stories at the kitchen table. Using a rich tapestry of archival material, oral history interviews, and newspaper articles, Mijnssen provides a thorough exploration of two cities in particular, Tula and Novorossiysk. By exploring the significance of Hero Cities in Soviet identity and the enduring but conflicted importance they hold for Russians today, Russia's Hero Cities exposes how the Great Patriotic War no longer has the power to mask the deep rifts still present in Russian society.

The first book-length account of a story too long overlooked Claro Solis wanted to win a gold star for his mother. He succeeded—as did seven other sons of “Little Mexico.” Second Street in Silvis, Illinois, was a poor neighborhood during the Great Depression that had become home to Mexicans fleeing revolution in their homeland. In 1971 it was officially renamed “Hero Street” to commemorate its claim to the highest per-capita casualty rate from any neighborhood during World War II. Marc Wilson now tells the story of this community and the young men it sent to fight for their adopted country. Hero Street, U.S.A. is the first book to recount a saga too long overlooked in histories and television documentaries. Interweaving family memories, soldiers’ letters, historical photographs, interviews with relatives, and firsthand combat accounts, Wilson tells the compelling stories of nearly eighty men from three dozen Second Street homes who volunteered to fight for their country in World War II and Korea—and of the eight, including Claro Solis, who never came back. As debate swirls around the place of Mexican immigrants in contemporary American society, this book shows the price of citizenship willingly paid by the sons of earlier refugees. With Hero Street, U.S.A., Marc Wilson not only makes an important contribution to military and social history but also acknowledges the efforts of the heroes of Second Street to realize the American dream.

Selected by Choice Magazine as an Outstanding Academic Title From Odysseus to Aeneas, from Beowulf to King Arthur, from the Mahâbhârata to the Ossetian "Nart" tales, epic heroes and their stories have symbolized the power of the human imagination. Drawing on diverse disciplines including classics, anthropology, psychology, and literary studies, this product of twenty years' scholarship provides a detailed typology of the hero in Western myth: birth, parentage, familial ties, sexuality, character, deeds, death, and afterlife. Dean A. Miller examines the place of the hero in the physical world (wilderness, castle, prison cell) and in society (among monarchs, fools, shamans, rivals, and gods). He looks at the hero in battle and quest; at his political status; and at his relationship to established religion. The book spans Western epic traditions, including Greek, Roman, Nordic, and Celtic, as well as the Indian and Persian legacies. A large section of the book also examines the figures who modify or accompany the hero: partners, helpers (animals and sometimes monsters), foes, foils, and even antitypes. The Epic Hero provides a comprehensive and provocative guide to epic heroes, and to the richly imaginative tales they inhabit.

8,000 copies of the book have already been sold on Bybit NFT Marketplace on 15 August 2022. With a total trading value of more than $186,000 currently. From the beginning of 2020, everybody's talking about Web 3.0 and the metaverse, where even Facebook changed its company’s name to Meta. The reason is simple - the fundamental aspect is NFTs. The digital age comes with its own lexicon, a bewildering array of buzz words and acronyms designed to confuse as much as they are to inform. Many new terms have found their way into our everyday vocabularies, although the meanings often get confused and blurred. You must be a person who is both curious about the world and has read many news articles about NFTs. However, I guess these articles were not able to answer all your questions, and you want to know how best to start your NFT journey. - Why would someone be willing to pay millions of dollars for a PFP (profile picture)? What’s the value behind it? - Many actors and singers have also released their own NFTs. However, the price quickly dropped by half after their launch. What's going on? - Nike, Adidas, Gucci, Hermès— it seems that big companies globally are entering the NFT market but how do we differentiate those seriously deploying from those just trying to take a cut from the hype? - According to statistics, in the first quarter of 2022, the transaction volume of NFTs reached $26 billion, exceeding the whole of 2021. However, another set of data tells you that the NFT market is down by 92%. Who should we trust? Is NFT the future, or is it just a bubble? We can see that the NFT market is on fire, but it also comes with a lot of chaos. This is the task I want to accomplish in this book: I will help you to discover the essence of NFTs below the surface of hype and chaos, as well as teach you how to master NFT step by step. Start from Zero to become an NFT Hero with my book. Let’s dive into the NFT world together!
