In seeking to understand society sociologists in the Public Policy, Welfare and Scoial Work set of the International Library of Sociology consider the policy and planning implications of attempts to respond to and meet social needs by the Church, Civil Service, Industry and Voluntary Organizations.

The purpose of this guidebook is to give municipalities a detailed account of how to adopt an affordable housing strategy. The introduction reviews the types of affordable housing strategies, their benefits & strengths, and the principles on which advice in the guidebook is based. The remaining chapters cover the following steps in strategy development: preparation (including establishment of a task force, developing terms of reference, identifying available resources and potential problems & solutions), needs assessment, public participation (including consultation, communication, & information dissemination), formulation of action plans and integrating them into a strategy, implementation of the strategy, partnership development & implementation, and strategy evaluation & monitoring. Case study examples are provided throughout for illustration.

Drawing upon research from six continents, Housing Needs and Policy Approaches analyzes the social problems involved with providing housing in the industrialized nations and in the Third World. The book focuses on four areas of concern: current trends in housing in specific Western countries, the role of Western governments in creating this housing, housing provisions in less developed nations, and the relationship of societal structure and housing, particularly with respect to the decentralization of population occurring in many regions.

This book re-examines the role of urban policy and planning in relation to the housing market in an era of global uncertainty and change. The relationship between planning and the housing market is a contested problem across research, policy, and practice. Problems with housing supply and affordability in many nations have been linked to planning system constraints, while the global financial crisis has raised new questions about the role of urban planning regulation and processes in responding to housing market trends. With reference to international cases from the United Kingdom, the United States, Ireland, Hong Kong and Australia, the book examines how different systems of urban planning and governance address complex and dynamic housing market trends. It also offers practical guidance on how urban planning can support an efficient supply of appropriate and affordable homes in preferred locations.
