Excerpt from Idylls of the Field Suddenly, as swift as thought, along the jagged edge of yonder purple cloud there flashes out a thin line of gold. Over it hovers a soft ethereal fan of light like the herald angel of the dawn. Broader grows the fringe of gold, swiftly running left and right along the cloudy heights, and reddening as it goes. Tiny Cloud lets, unseen before, are touched with glowing fire, and float like attendant Spirits clad in burnished gold. It is the gold of Paradise. N o ore of earthly mine ever shone with lustre a hundredth part so fair. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book offers a new interpretation of William Morris’s utopianism as a strategic extension of his political writing. Morris’s utopian writing, alongside his journalism and public lectures, constituted part of a sustained counter-hegemonic project that intervened both into the life-world of the fin de siècle socialist movement, as well as the dominant literary cultures of his day. Owen Holland demonstrates this by placing Morris in conversation with writers of first-wave feminism, nineteenth-century pastoralists, as well as the romance revivalists and imperialists of the 1880s. In doing so, he revises E.P. Thompson’s and Miguel Abensour’s argument that Morris’s utopian writing should be conceived as anti-political and heuristic, concerned with the pedagogic education of desire, rather than with the more mundane work of propaganda. He shows how Morris’s utopianism emerged against the grain of the now-here, embroiled in instrumental, propagandistic polemic, complicating Thompson’s and Abensour’s view of its anti-political character.

'The Age of Tennyson' by Hugh Walker is an examination of the literary period from 1830 to 1870. While this time is often referred to as the Tennysonian era, the book explains why it ended over twenty years before Tennyson's death. The volume highlights Tennyson, Browning, Arnold, and Ruskin as the survivors into a new period but includes sketches of their later works as well. The book's main focus is on the greater men of the era and their search for truth and understanding, as seen in science, psychology, and the development of clear and precise writing.
