This book presents techniques to render photo-realistic images by programming the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). We discuss effects such as mirror reflections, refractions, caustics, diffuse or glossy indirect illumination, radiosity, single or multiple scattering in participating media, tone reproduction, glow, and depth of field. The book targets game developers, graphics programmers, and also students with some basic understanding of computer graphics algorithms, rendering APIs like Direct3D or OpenGL, and shader programming. In order to make the book self-contained, the most important concepts of local illumination and global illumination rendering, graphics hardware, and Direct3D/HLSL programming are reviewed in the first chapters. After these introductory chapters we warm up with simple methods including shadow and environment mapping, then we move on toward advanced concepts aiming at global illumination rendering. Since it would have been impossible to give a rigorous review of all approaches proposed in this field, we go into the details of just a few methods solving each particular global illumination effect. However, a short discussion of the state of the art and links to the bibliography are also provided to refer the interested reader to techniques that are not detailed in this book. The implementation of the selected methods is also presented in HLSL, and we discuss their observed performance, merits, and disadvantages. In the last chapter, we also review how these techniques can be integrated in an advanced game engine and present case studies of their exploitation in games. Having gone through this book, the reader will have an overview of the state of the art, will be able to apply and improve these techniques, and most importantly, will be capable of developing brand new GPU algorithms. Before printing, books were written with reed pens using black ink and Arabic letters on papers that were polished with ahar (Mixture made with cornstarch and egg white for polishing the paper) and mühre (a device made of glass, used to make paper smooth and shiny). Important ones were written in “beautiful writing” (Hüsn-i Hat) and embellished with illuminations, marblings, engravings and miniatures. The books prepared in such artistic ways were generally given to Padishahs, lady sultans, and notable people of the time and were dedicated to libraries founded by those who are interested in books. Manuscript libraries that contain the old waqf libraries are today centres of illumination examples. However, it is not that easy for people who would like to see the examples of specific time or illuminator since a catalogue system has not been made yet. It is often not allowed to get pictures from manuscripts (because it will give damage to the books). Therefore, students are not able to see as many examples as they like or they need. Illumination is the name given to the embellishments, which are made with paints and gold, of manuscript books. Consequently, the art of illumination started to disappear as printing came into our country. School of Calligraphers (Medresetü’l-Hattatîn) which was set up in 1914 put the arts of manuscript books into action again. The aim of this book is to constitute a collection of precious examples chosen from unique manuscripts for the learners of illumination. All photos in the book were taken at Suleymaniye Library. In order to reach this goal, the text is meant to be short and examples are chosen from the works most of which have copying dates listed and they are chosen especially from the Seljuk, Beylik and Ottoman periods. Collection name of the book from which the example is taken and its recording number, name of the book and writer if any, outer measure, copying date, page number, name of its illuminator or miniature house if known and appropriate short information about it are written under the pictures. We hope this album of Turkish Illumination Art in which we tried to give as many examples as possible, will be beneficial especially for students. The book also offers techniques and space for practising.

Reprint of the original, first published in 1874. The publishing house Anatiposi publishes historical books as reprints. Due to their age, these books may have missing pages or inferior quality. Our aim is to preserve these books and make them available to the public so that they do not get lost.
