Informatics In Higher Education

This book addresses two main themes. The first is, the discipline of informatics. Two major questions will be discussed: how can we obtain and keep track of a systematic and objective overview of the vast landscape in higher informatics education, both nationally and internationally? and would it be useful to rationalize and redesign the informatics curricula, leading to less fragmentation and more communality? The second theme is the relation between informatics and other disciplines, with the following main questions: what informatics do we need to offer a coherent curriculum which suits the needs of the actual information society with respect to specific disciplines? what is relevant in informatics and CIT to provide to others? and what informatics concepts, methods and techniques form the hard core needed in every other discipline?

The International Conference on Informatics in Schools: Situation, Evolution and Perspectives - ISSEP - is a forum for researchers and practitioners in the area of Informatics education, both in primary and secondary schools. It provides an opportunity for educators to reflect upon the goals and objectives of this subject, its curricula and various teaching/learning paradigms and topics, possible connections to everyday life and various ways of establishing Informatics Education in schools. This conference also cares about teaching/learning materials, various forms of assessment, traditional and innovative educational research designs, Informatics' contribution to the preparation of children for the 21st century, motivating competitions, projects and activities supporting informatics education in school.

A European wide survey on the EDUCTRA (Education and Training in Health Informatics) Concerted Action, was commenced in 1992 under the auspices of the AIM (Advanced Informatics in Medicine in Europe) programme. This book consists of four parts. The first chapter reproduces the original EC Recommendation and outlines the concerted European efforts in education and training in health telematics made by the European Commission, DG XIII Health Telematics office. The second part provides the general guidelines for European curricula in health informatics as they were developed and elaborated by the members of the EDUCTRA Concerned Action (1992-1994). The third part of this volume entails the detailed descriptions and applications of curricula in health informatics in European states. The fourth part consists of a glossary of terms and acronyms used in current research and practice of health informatics. The work provides a comprehensive overview of the current needs in health informatics in Europe but also the necessary guidelines, materials, tools and applications for improving education and training within the near future. Educational informatics represents the convergence of key aspects of information science, computing, and education while exploiting Web-based techniques and standards.
