Innovative Bridge Designs For Rapid Renewal

This report from the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2), which is administered by the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies, documents the development of standardized approaches to designing and constructing complete bridge systems for rapid renewals.

The R04 MathCAD files for the SHRP 2 Report S2-R04-RR-2 are available to help illustrate the sample accelerated bridge construction (ABC) design calculations. The sample design calculations serve as training tools for engineers to increase familiarity with ABC design issues and criteria. A demonstration project on US 6 over the Keg Creek near Council Bluffs, Iowa was completed in 2011 using the accelerated bridge construction standards developed as part of Renewal Project R04. " TRB's second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP 2) Report S2-R06A-RR-1: Nondestructive Testing to Identify Concrete Bridge Deck Deterioration identifies nondestructive testing technologies for detecting and characterizing common forms of deterioration in concrete bridge decks.The report also documents the validation of promising technologies, and grades and ranks the technologies based on results of the validations.The main product of this project will be an electronic repository for practitioners, known as the NDToolbox, which will provide information regarding recommended technologies for the detection of a particular deterioration. This report establishes a user's manual for the acceptance, repair, or rejection of precast/prestressed concrete girders with longitudinal web cracking. The report also proposes revisions to the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and provides recommendations to develop improved crack control reinforcement details for use in new girders. The material in this report will be of immediate interest to bridge engineers.
