Introduction To Human Musculoskeletal Gross Anatomy

This book is a guide for the dissection of the back and limbs - regions which are specifically relevant in the education of students in occupation and physical therapy. It contains data pertinent to many of the structures which are to be examined in the gross anatomy laboratory.

This text presents gross anatomy in an expanded outline format. Its conciseness and logical organization permit easy previewing of the subject matter before a lecture or laboratory as well as efficient learning and reviewing of the material before an examination. Notwithstanding its succinct style, the text's coverage of gross anatomy is comprehensive and is written at a level of detail appropriate for the medical student.The book begins with an introduction, setting forth basic principles and terminology that will serve the student throughout the remainder of the text. Overviews of the nervous, muscular, skeletal, and vascular systems are also included in the introduction. The main part of the text is organized in the following sequence: The Back; The Thorax; The Abdomen; The Perineum and Pelvis; The Head and Neck; The Upper Limb; and The Lower Limb. Clinical notes that highlight anatomy relevant to current medical practice appear throughout these chapters. Since each regional anatomy chapter is complete in itself, the order in which they are studied is optional.

Most textbooks and atlases of human anatomy describe only a few cases of variations in the 'normal' human population, or of anomalies of the muscles. These variations and anomalies are also often excluded from the curricula in colleges of medicine and dentistry in the U.S.A. and in many other countries. However, it is known that each person within the 'normal' population has at least a few muscle variations, and there are millions of individuals born globally every year with muscle anomalies. It is highly likely that during their careers, almost all medical professionals working with any aspect related to muscles - including muscle physiology, gross anatomy, physiotherapy, surgery - will be faced with at least a few cases of muscle variations and/or anomalies. There are therefore crucial gaps of knowledge between what teachers of medical and dentistry schools teach, what students learn, what textbooks and atlases show, and the reality that medical professionals will face in practice during their careers.
