Jakarta Malay

This book combines the work of twenty-one authors from East and West, some of whom are long-time residents of Jakarta and all of whom have lived and studied there for shorter or longer periods. They have in common that each of them has become fascinated by certain characteristics of Jakarta’s many-sided life. The subjects they deal with range from conditions in VOC Batavia to particular national or ethnic communities to administrative developments. The essays on early colonial Batavia yield new insights into the demographic situation bases on archival research, and those essays dealing with more modern topics make use of special sources, including maps, that are not easily accessible through libraries. Reading through this volume one encounters striking parallels between the past and the present, because many aspects of present-day Jakarta are deeply rooted in the history of the city: demography and urban morphology, environmental absurdities, traffic, and floods as well as ritual and symbolism. Historians, anthropologists, sociologists, administrators, and town planners may well draw inspiration from this kaleidoscopic picture of Indonesia’s capital.

While many books have probed the role of Islam in political and social change in Southeast Asia over the past three decades, few have focused on the power of the religious discourse itself in shaping this transformation. Peranakan Chinese communities and their “hybrid” culture have fascinated many observers. This book, comprising fourteen chapters, was mainly based on papers written by the author in the last two decades. The chapters address Peranakan Chinese cultural, national and political identities in the Malay Archipelago, i.e., Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore (IMS). This book is divided into two parts. Part I which is on the regional dimension, contains nine chapters that discuss the three countries and beyond. Part II consists of five chapters which focus on one country, i.e., Indonesia. This book not only discusses the past and the present, but also the future of the Peranakan Chinese.

This work grew out of field research on Malay – Chinese Indonesian interaction along the Northern Coasts of West Kalimantan. The research proves that the interaction between the two entities in this area is not similar to the one we found in Teluk Pakedai, Kubu Raya Regency. In Teluk Pakedai, the harmonious interaction originated by a sort of “simplicity.” Paperless economic transaction between Malay and Chinese Indonesian traders is a living tradition. Neither receipt nor bill is needed, even in debt transactions. When questioned, what if another party forgets or dies? The answer was: “Nothing to worry about, it is Teluk Pakedai.” The similar simplicity is also found in conflict resolution, elites who first recognized the problem would come to the other group discussing the solution with no need to investigate “who commits the sin”. Furthermore, regarding the question of “Who are the earliest inhabitants of Teluk Pakedai, Malay-Bugis or Chinese?” many Malay-Bugis, in contrast to popular identification of Teluk Pakedai as Malay-Bugis settlement, provided an interesting answer: “….possibly Chinese as the name Teluk Pakedai refers to an old time Chinese Shop.
