The parable is the most well-known literary form presented in the gospels. And since narrative or story sermons are such a prominent element in the contemporary pulpit, pastors are preaching on the parable texts more frequently than ever. Richard Gribble thoroughly examines each of the parables appearing in Cycle C of the Revised Common Lectionary. Each analysis includes: - discussion of the theme - spiritual food for the journey - application of the parable to contemporary life - openings for preaching - points of challenge and questions to ponder - exegesis and explanation of the parable - context of the parable These studies will be a classic resource for preaching... or useful for Bible study and inspiration. The author of eight books and over 100 articles, Richard Gribble, CSC, is the acting superior at Moreau Seminary at the University of Notre Dame. Father Gribble earned his Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America and has also earned degrees from the United States Naval Academy, the University of Southern California, and the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley.

Jesus said in Mark 4:13 - "And He (Jesus) said to them (the disciples), 'Do you not understand this parable? How will you understand all the parables?'" Is Jesus suggesting that the understanding of this parable was necessary for the understanding of all that He was teaching? This book provides for an understanding of the Parable of the Sower and, also, a means for understanding the Gospels/Acts based on the thematic context of that parable. The themes of each of the Gospels/Acts are identified based on the nature of the soils in the parable. A direct connection is made between the people-type soils of the Parable of the Sower and each of the themes of the Gospels/Acts. These connections provide for a deeper understanding of the Gospels/Acts and for a clearer insight into how these Scriptures apply to everyday life. The progressive nature of these connections is presented, and it forms a user friendly framework for spiritual maturity. A study guide for the each of the Gospels/Acts, based on the themes of the Parable of the Sower, is also included.

The earliest of the four Gospels, the book portrays Jesus as an enigmatic figure, struggling with enemies, his inner and external demons, and with his devoted but disconcerted disciples. Unlike other gospels, his parables are obscure, to be explained secretly to his followers. With an introduction by Nick Cave

As the title suggests, this book is a manual for Christian discipleship. This is not just the author's choice of title for this book but what is clearly the Lord Jesus' purpose for His eight parables in Matthew 13. When we look closely at these parables, we will see a pattern emerge, where they take the reader from receiving the Word of God and becoming rooted in it, to becoming a fruitful sower with the responsibility of feeding members of God's household. That means it is relevant for both the new Christian and also those in positions of responsibility in church leadership who are called to disciple others. Ultimately all Christians are called to disciple others and therefore it applies to all who are seeking to live in obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ. The progression of revelation from parable to parable is what I believe lays the groundwork for what is the big picture of Christian discipleship and Jesus' teaching on salvation. Evangelical Christianity's failure to unlock these parables has led to a lack of cohesiveness in discipleship teaching and salvation and the result is a dysfunctional church that fails in shining forth the light of God. My hope is that this book will be a step forward for the church to better understand Jesus' teaching as revealed in the Matthew 13 parables, leading to a deepening of its roots in the Word and will of God. It is only this that will distinguish the church from the world, allowing its light to shine forth like a beacon in the night, giving hope for all those seeking to find their way.
