This dissertation is a theological analysis of the trinitarian shape of Jonathan Edwards' aesthetics of beauty. The contributions of this dissertation lie chiefly in three areas. The primary aim of this study is to advance the burgeoning field of the study of Jonathan Edwards by elucidating his views of beauty. In so doing, I present him as a rich source for the theological engagement of beauty, which could serve not only the field of Edwards studies, but also that of theological aesthetics more broadly.

Beauty is hard to describe, but easy to identify. It resides in expected and unexpected places in our world. Beauty is present in our world in a variety of forms. Yet while the average person might think about the reality of beauty from time to time, few people would think about the source of beauty. Where does beauty come from? Why is it here? Several hundred years ago Jonathan Edwards did some thinking of his own on this difficult subject. This volume explores his meditation on the subject and lays out a Christian framework for understanding and experiencing the beauty God has planted in His world. Edwards found in the study of beauty the person of God. Where Edwards saw beautiful images and acts, he saw a representation, a small picture, of a reality too great to comprehend, a God too majestic to adequately adore. He sets in motion a path of glory that begins with the Lord, moves to creation, continues to the incarnation of Christ, moves to the church, and ascends to the glory of heaven, where the Holy Trinity dwells. Easily accessible and readable, you do not need to be a scholar to enjoy these insights about Jonathan Edwards and his writings.

Jonathan Edwards on the Experience of Beauty relates Edwards' idea of beauty to his understanding of the psychology of religious experience. In his vocabulary of the language of beauty Edwards articulates a traditional understanding of beauty in the various relations that constitute primary and secondary beauty. All beauty, however, is ultimately founded on the beauty of God's Trinitarian being. Edwards' concept of the "sense of the heart," related to his psychology of religious experience, is articulated as an infusion of God's beauty. This experience results in a new perception and manifestation of holiness and beauty in the lives of the saints, both individually and corporately. True believers are to be "proportioned Christians," showing forth beauty in their affections. Edwards explicated this perspective in sermons, treatises--especially Religious Affections--and in a number of cases he presented, including the religious experiences of David Brainerd, Sarah Edwards, and his own awakening and conversion. In these cases, the language of beauty plays a prominent descriptive role. Jonathan Edwards' Treatise on Religious Affections is one of the Puritan pastor's most well-known and widely read works. Intended by him as an explication of that which constitutes 'true religion' as demonstrated in 'gracious affections, ' there is an intriguing but little understood aspect of his thought that makes an appearance in the work. The pastor asserted that, among other things, a key indicator that one was in possession of gracious affections was that one could see and love the beauty of God. Later in Affections, Edwards further asserts that not only would one see and love God's beauty, but also reflect his beauty. This thesis is concerned with several tasks that arise from Edwards' assertions. First, by examining the concept of beauty as it emerges in his early metaphysical work, his use of typology, and a significant piece of his ethics, a developing framework emerges within his thought that, while not complete at that point, enables us to gain a clearer sense of the meaning contained in his use of the term. The framework there developed serves to point in the direction of Edwards' Trinitarian theology, thereby giving full and distinct shape to his particular notion of beauty, particularly as it relates to God. Having drawn to the fore the Trinitarian shape of beauty, the argument turns toward examining the manner in which Edwards believed divine beauty would be communicated ad extra, in work that beautifies the world and, more importantly to Edwards, the believer. Particular attention is paid to the dynamic that existed, to Edwards' mind, between the indwelling of the Spirit, the saint's participation in the divine life of mutual love and consent, and the effect of beauty upon the will. Further, having examined Edwards' notions at a theoretical level, the thesis is concerned to understand the implications of beauty, as expressed in his spirituality. To that end, several pastoral works are examined: Religious Affections, the "Church Covenant," and two letters of pastoral counsel will each be mined toward the end of discerning the manner in which the Puritan pastor sought to apply his conception of divine beauty. This thesis concludes that while Edwards often used aesthetic language when discussing beauty in its various forms, the notion ultimately held a moral referent that was indelibly shaped by his Trinitarian theology. Finally, attention is given to assessing Edwards' ideas, seeking the benefits to be found there, as well as offering suggestions for strengthening the weaker elements of his framework.

The eighteenth-century Puritan theologian Jonathan Edwards has become popular again in contemporary theological discussion. Central to Edwards' theology is his concept of beauty. Delattre wrote the standard work on this topic half a century ago. However, Delattre approaches Edwards mainly as a philosopher, and he does not address how Edwards employs the concept of beauty to explain and defend traditional Reformed doctrines. Recent writings by McClymond, Holmes, and others have shown that defending the Reformed tradition is a fundamental concern of Edwards. This work reveals how Edwards, starting with the common notion that beauty means the appropriate proportional relationship, develops a theological aesthetic that contributes to a rational understanding of major doctrines such as the Trinity, Christology, and eschatology. It shows that Edwards is both an innovative speculative theologian and a staunch defender of Reformed orthodoxy.

Jonathan Edwards’ theologically sophisticated psychology of grace remains one of the deepest and most fertile theological psychologies in the Protestant tradition. The heart of his account lies in his foundational doctrine of spiritual perception where he locates the psychological core of the engraced Christian life. This work revisits Edwards’ doctrine from the perspective of recent work in the philosophy of emotions and other related philosophical sub-disciplines. The aim is to recover this often neglected theme in contemporary theology and renew it by bringing Edwards’ theological insights into conversation with various spheres of contemporary philosophical discussion. The account of spiritual perception that emerges from this interdisciplinary dialogue is one that seeks to revise, update and deepen Edwards’ own thinking on the matter in five major ways. The book concludes by arguing that the capacity for spiritual and emotional perception of the supreme good is grounded upon a wisdom-like seminal virtue centred upon the incarnate Christ (i.e., Christocentric wisdom). Such wisdom, on the renewed account, is considered the psychological core of transforming grace and the foundational basis upon which all other Christian virtues are formed.

They also take up such rarely-explored topics as Edwards's missiology, treatment of heaven and angels, sacramental thought, public theology, and views of non-Christian religions. Running throughout the volume are what the authors identify as five basic theological constituents: trinitarian communication, creaturely participation, necessitarian dispositionalism, divine priority, and harmonious constitutionalism. Later chapters trace his influence on and connections with later theologies and philosophies in America and Europe. The result is a multi-layered analysis that treats Edwards as a theologian for the twenty-first-century global Christian community, and a bridge between the Christian West and East, Protestantism and Catholicism, conservatism and liberalism, and charismatic and non-charismatic churches.
