Life Begins at Eighty is a collection of the author Virginia Bathurst Beck's columns about her life, from Depression days to the present. Beck loves to write and has written all her life, including skits for PTA and for her Tops clubs, letters to the editor, and political letters to get things done or undone. She has written poetry just for her amusement or the pure joy and laughter of her friends. She wrote rap before it became popular! She wrote the first column when she was eighty for the Star News in Port St. Joe, Florida. Soon, she was writing for the Pilot Tribune in her old home town of Blair, Nebraska and Zapata, Texas where they had formerly wintered. Her writing life had begun. She covers topics in her columns from the growing up during the Depression, when milk was given away free and lamb chops were five cents per pound, to walking three miles to school through snow and wind. She recalls the animals in her life, dogs, cats, and horses that she loved, as well as the importance of family connections and memories. The charming columns in Life Begins at Eighty provide a vivid, humorous picture of one woman's fascinating life and times.

I was born as Virginia Doris Keziah Bathurst. The Keziah is a bible name I inherited from my grandma. The Doris was from my aunt. When I was born in 1923 they didnt require a birth certificate. I didnt get a certicficate until I went to work for SAC Air Force Base when it was in Ogden, Utah. My father got it for me and for some reason the two middle names were left out. Years later, when I went to work fo the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, it was required that your maiden name initial appear on your Social Security Card. Well, since I was married then, Ive been Virginia Bathurst Beck ever since.

Lloyd looks out of his office window and sees the airplane hit the WTC. Eric comes out of the closet to tell about his gay life, Bob gives us an insight into the life of a Moonie, the surgeon general of the United States receives her walking papers from the president, childhood memories of nonsensical rhymes, neighborhood stories, a little gossip, and a few smoke dreams are but a few of the memories included. Many events are true stories as told to me by the original source, and others are hearsay. Some stories have been passed down through generations, becoming memories as they traveled. Credit to the original author has been acknowledged where possible. Any omission of credit to an author is unintentional. Some material was checked on Google, but the source was not always available. Real names have been used where permission was granted and pseudonyms for others. A small part of these memories appeared in This I Remember, a self-published memoir.

★ Publishers Weekly starred review Seasoned pastor and church leader Will Willimon excels at creating thought-provoking, accessible books for working pastors and seminarians. In Aging, he takes a theologically rich look at numerous aspects of growing old. Drawing on Scripture, literature, current research, and his experiences as an aging adult, Willimon reflects on aging as a spiritual journey. He explores the challenging realties as well as the rewarding joys of growing old and shows pastors how to help their congregants grow old gracefully and in good Christian hope. Willimon also offers practical advice on helping church members as they encounter retirement, aging, caring for the aging, loss, bereavement, and finding faith in the last quarter of life. This eloquent, delightfully Christian perspective on aging will be of interest to all who care for aging souls--not only pastors but also chaplains and other ministers in hospitals, hospices, and extended care facilities. About the Series Pastors are called to help people navigate the profound mysteries of being human, from birth to death and everything in between. This series, edited by leading pastoral theologian Jason Byassee, provides pastors and pastors-in-training with rich theological reflection on the various seasons that make up a human life, helping them minister with greater wisdom and joy.

Life Begins@Sixty by Joan Frentz. The strength of this book lies in relating to the kind of deep-down feelings and challenges we women face every day: taking up the treadmill yet another time or eating a decadent hunk of chocolate because there was no hope. It was comforting to know that I am not alone. Life Begins@Sixty is not just for women over sixty. It's for every woman who has bought new clothes because the old didn't fit any longer. It's for every woman who has been on every single diet on earth. It's for every woman who knows she has to get out there and start living better but just hasn't been able to. - Magai Pitchai, Literary Editor

The early years of television relied in part on successful narratives of another medium, as studios adapted radio programs like Boston Blackie and Defense Attorney to the small screen. Many shows were adapted more than once, like the radio program Blondie, which inspired six television adaptations and 28 theatrical films. These are but a few of the 1,164 programs covered in this volume. Each program entry contains a detailed story line, years of broadcast, performer and character casts and principal production credits where possible. Two appendices ("Almost a Transition" and "Television to Radio") and a performer's index conclude the book. This first-of-its-kind encyclopedia covers many little-known programs that have rarely been discussed in print (e.g., Real George, based on Me and Janie; Volume One, based on Quiet, Please; and Galaxy, based on X Minus One). Covered programs include The Great Gildersleeve, Howdy Doody, My Friend Irma, My Little Margie, Space Patrol and Vic and Sade.
