Living Beings

Pots and Other Living Beings is made up of poems with paired photographs, each describing an aspect of living in the postmodern, neoliberal age, with its promised and failed utopia, ruin, and dispossessions. The work comes from a series of 4000 photographs and binders full of notes, created during a research trip to the American southwest regarding the founding, making, dreaming, and proliferation of the nuclear bomb; thinking of the food, family farms, arts, schools, hospitals, we could have had, if our resources, imagination, time, and energy had been directed towards life, in all of his/her forms.

Living Beings examines the vital characteristics of social interactions between living beings, including humans, other animals and trees.Many discussions of such relationships highlight the exceptional qualities of the human members of the category, insisting for instance on their religious beliefs or creativity. In contrast, the international case studies in this volume dissect views based on hierarchical oppositions between human and other living beings. Although human practices may sometimes appear to exist in a realm beyond nature, they are nevertheless subject to the pull of natural forces. These forces may be brought into prominence through a consideration of the interactions between human beings and other inhabitants of the natural world.The interplay in this book between social anthropologists, philosophers and artists cuts across species divisions to examine the experiential dimensions of interspecies engagements. In ethnographically and/or historically contextualized chapters, contributors examine the juxtaposition of human and other living beings in the light of themes such as wildlife safaris, violence, difference, mimicry, simulation, spiritual renewal, dress and language.

This is a well-researched and brilliantly written book by Thomas Huxley, an English biologist who was instrumental in developing scientific education in Britain. He worked on vertebrates, especially the relationship between man and the apes. Moreover, one of his most significant conclusions was that birds evolved from dinosaurs, small carnivorous theropods.

This book is based on the author's research carried out over the last ten years in terms of emotional management. It establishes the intervention of emotions at all levels of management: the Littré definition, management being the art of the possible, "the art of guiding, managing, handling, motivating ... even resolving and arranging". Emotion is a subject studied particularly in management in English speaking countries and has become a topic of growing interest in organizational behavior. E-motion is, in this book, considered based on its etymological origin (ex-movere: put into action by the external factors). The objective is to demonstrate a new vision of responsible management and to confront the current challenges in motion. In this way, the latter tends to take into consideration the 'living', i.e. the psychobiological, neurological and sociological aspects of people in business.
