In recent decades, historical context and allusions have featured prominently in criticism as has a growing awareness of Austen's sophisticated psychological characterisations. Two notable film versions of the novel were released: Frances O'Connor starring in the lead role in the 1999 version co-starring Jonny Lee Miller and followed by Billie Piper starring in the 2007 version for ITV1 co-starring Blake Ritson. Emma, is a novel about youthful hubris and the perils of misconstrued romance. The story takes place in the fictional village of Highbury and the surrounding estates of Hartfield, Randalls, and Donwell Abbey and involves the relationships among individuals in those locations consisting of "3 or 4 families in a country village".The novel was first published in December 1815 while the author was alive, with its title page listing a publication date of 1816. As in her other novels, Austen explores the concerns and difficulties of genteel women living in Georgian-Regency England; she also creates a lively comedy of manners among her characters and depicts issues of marriage, gender, age, and social status.

Emma is about the life of a beautiful, clever and rich woman of twenty-one, who lives with her father in their huge estate. The wealthy, and somewhat spoilt Emma Woodhouse has no interest in falling in love or getting married, but finds pleasure in trying to make romantic matches for her friends. After the successful union of Miss Taylor, her long time governess and friend, with Mr Weston, she takes young Harriet Smith under her wing, the next target of her matchmaking schemes. Mr Knightley, a trusted friend of the Wood houses, is the only one who criticizes her and advises whenever necessary, but the naïve Emma has a long way to go before she realises the consequences of her actions as a self-proclaimed matchmaker. The story follows Emma’s journey through all her meddling and how she discovers a lot about herself and about an unrealised love!

The novel did not receive any public reviews until 1821.The novel tells the story of Fanny Price, starting when her overburdened family sends her at age ten to live in the household of her wealthy aunt and uncle and following her development into early adulthood. From early on critical interpretation has been diverse, differing particularly over the character of the heroine, Austen's views about theatrical performance and the centrality or otherwise of ordination and religion, and on the question of slavery. Some of these problems have been highlighted in the several later adaptations of the story for stage and screen."

Emma Woodhouse has the world at her fingertips. She's young, pretty, and smart; she also happens to be the reigning queen of her village's social scene. Emma lives in Highbury, a small town about sixteen miles outside of London, with her aging father. Mr. Woodhouse loves Emma, but he's utterly unable to offer her any guidance - which is perhaps why Emma doesn't seem to have any sense of her own limitations. Life seems pretty sweet - if a bit boring - and so Emma decides to spice things up by taking on a protégé, Harriet Smith. Even though Emma's determined never to marry herself, she immediately decides to find Harriet a husband.Determined to make Harriet into a gentlewoman, Emma sets out to refine Harriet's tastes - especially in men. She convinces Harriet to dump Robert Martin, the young farmer who likes her, and set her sights on the town's clergyman, Mr. Elton. Unfortunately, Mr. Elton turns out to be in love with Emma - or at least with Emma's money. After the Mr. Elton debacle, Emma thinks that she's learned her lessons in matchmaking. Luckily for us (if not for Harriet), she hasn't.
