The book presents a collection of large-scale network-modeling studies on coastal systems in Latin America. It includes a novel description of the functioning of coastal complex ecosystems and also predicts how natural and human-made disturbances percolate through the networks. Coastal areas belong to the most populated ecosystems around the globe, and are massively influenced by human impacts such as shipping, mining, fisheries, tourism, pollution and human settlements. Even though many of these activities have facilitated socio-economic development, they have also caused a significant deterioration in natural populations, communities and ecosystems worldwide. Covering coastal marine ecosystems of Latin America such as the NE and SE Pacific, NW Atlantic and Caribbean areas, it discusses the construction of quantitative (Ecopath-Ecosim-Ecospace and Centrality of Node Sets) and semi-quantitative (Loop Analysis) multispecies trophic-network models to describe and assess the impacts of natural and human interventions like pelagic and benthic fishing as well as natural events such as El Niño, and La Niña. The book also features steady state (and/or near moving equilibrium) and dynamical models to support the management of exploited organisms, and applies and quantifies macroscopic indices, based on Ascendency (Ulanowicz) and Local Stability (Levins ́ Loop Analysis). Further, it discusses the determination of the Keystone Species Complex Index, which is a holistic extension of the classical concept of Keystone Species (Paine), offering novel strategies for conservation monitoring and management.

The marine environment is one of our most precious yet fragile natural resources. It provides a wide range of essential goods and services, including food, regulation of climate and nutrient cycling, as well as a setting for transport, recreation and tourism. This environment is however extremely complex and very sensitive to development pressures and other forms of human influence. Planning and management of the sea are similarly complicated, reflecting intricate legal, institutional and ownerships patterns. This creates a situation where marine ecosystems are vulnerable to over-exploitation or neglect. The Ecosystem Approach to Marine Planning and Management describes how growing concern about the state of our seas is resulting in the development of new approaches to marine planning and management. For example, the United Nations Environment Programme has called for the widespread introduction of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP), and the European Union has recently been consulting on a new European Maritime Policy designed to stimulate economic growth but at the same time protect the resource base. Within the United Kingdom, the 2010 Marine Act draws upon the experience of town and country planning and brings into being a new system of Marine Spatial Planning. Once, a resident living on the coast of Tamban, Malang district, asked me about the safety of his family living on the coast of Tamban, which had been threatened by tsunami three times. I told the resident that the tsunami that would hit the coast of Tamban could not be predicted, whether or not it would arrive as expected. I explained that the sea level rise and land subsidence continue to occur on the Tamban coast. I described it "unpredictable". The resident's questions pose a challenge for me and the research team to prepare policy inputs for local governments regarding disaster control efforts at Tamban beach, Malang Regency. Our research team submitted a proposal to the Education Fund Management Institute (LPDP) which is under the supervision of the Ministry of Finance with the title "AN INTEGRATED MODEL OF COASTAL ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION MANAGEMENT IN TAMBAN BEACH AREA, MALANG REGENCY". Alhamdulillah, the proposal was approved by LPDP. The research started from November 2021 to November 2022. One of the outputs of the research is compiled textbooks. This textbook provides a framework for dealing with flood control efforts. Therefore, this book is a textbook for researchers, students, and anyone interested in controlling other tsunami and tidal floods due to anthropogenic processes and tidal flooding. The purpose of this textbook is to provide information about the theory and how it is implemented in the field. This course is an integral part of the Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management (PWPLT) course. The contents of this book emphasize the introduction of elements of coastal ecosystems, the framework for designing coastal areas in the context of disaster mitigation and adaptation, methodologies, applications and analysis results in the form of application methods and policy formulations for the government to tackle disasters in coastal areas. In New Zealand, our understanding of coastal marine ecosystems is surprisingly limited. Ecosystem models that link all species in a food web via energy transfer can be valuable tools for increasing our understanding of these ecosystems. We present the data required to build a balanced ecosystem model for the coastal marine region surrounding and including Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve, near Gisborne, New Zealand. We consolidate species into 22 groups and discuss them in detail, presenting additional information for subgroups and individual species as available. We review the literature and field data used to estimate values for each group as well as for the system as a whole. We also outline how we defined the spatial extent of many groups. For each group, we discuss the variability within estimates of four main data types (biomass, production rates, consumption rates and diet preferences) and we outline different ways to estimate diet composition to maximise the realism of such models. We are relatively confident that the data presented here accurately represent the structure and function of the ecosystem. However, there are many groups for which better information would improve model reliability. Therefore, we should aim to fill these knowledge gaps in the future, to better inform ecosystem models for coastal marine systems.
