The book contains a selection of articles written in the years 1962-2004 and published in English or French languages. They provide information and present views of the author on matters relating to the development and transforrnations which occurred in maritime law in the second haif of the 20th century. Articles on Polish maritirne law arę presented separately from morę numerous articles on international and transnational maritime law.The articles compiled in this book illustrate the process of important changes and developments occurred in maritime law in the said period.They indicate how problems created by the progress in the organisation of maritime trade, technical innovations and political changes on the map of the world were identified, consi-dered and sometimes solved, in the latter case the relevant article may have only a historical signif icance. At the same time some traditional institutions of maritime law were changingtheir role and neededa reappraisal and revision.

This book is the first of its kind to explore the problems inherent in the unification of maritime law. Featuring contributions from leading experts at European maritime law research centres, it considers international conventions, current maritime practice, standard forms and recently adopted or drafted national codifications of maritime law from the codification point of view. The book is divided into four parts which represent different views on the main topic. Part I gathers chapters dedicated to different aspects and methods of unification of maritime law on a global scale, as well as several specific issues of maritime law from the regulatory point of view. Part II of the book consists of those papers that centre around the issue of transport of goods. Part III is dedicated to codifications of carriage of passengers, cruise law and leisure navigation. Finally, Part IV addresses national codifications of maritime law. Codification of Maritime Law: Challenges, Possibilities and Experience seeks to provide common ground for future unification of maritime law, which makes the book useful both for private and public maritime lawyers and states’ maritime administrations worldwide.

These collected essays examine different aspects of the modern law of the sea. They address many key provisions in the United Convention on the Law of the Sea, including its historical development, the substantive rules governing navigation, resources, the regime of the high seas, maritime jurisdiction, the protection of the marine environment and the delimitation of maritime boundaries, as well as the settlement of disputes. The essays also review the Implementation Agreement of 1994 concerning deep seabed mining and the Implementation Agreement of 1995 concerning Straddling and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks. The author presents purely personal views on many negotiations and cases in which he participated. The essays, written between 1988 and 2006, will be of interest to everyone involved in the law of the sea. Davis Anderson is a former legal adviser to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (1960-1996) and judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (1996-2005).
